Suppressing Feelings

Suppressing Feelings

A Poem by Yasmin McClurg

I feel that I have to suppress my feelings around you.
You tell me to be honest with you,
To let you in.
But how can I do that,
When it upsets you?

You can't be bothered with my emotions,
Only if I'm happy.
But when I'm happy you shoot my feelings down,
Changing my emotions a 180 degrees.
But I guess that is my fault,
For not blocking them out.

When I am upset you get annoyed,
You can't be bothered with it.
I have to pretend around you,
Then you call me fake and dishonest, a liar.
I don't understand what you want me to do.

I need direction,
And you won't give it.
So to keep you happy,
I'll turn to stone,
I'll be like the other girls.
Forget who I was because I am changing;
Suppressing feelings, forgetting myself
