Boogyman

A children's story with a darker theme.

Violet tossed and turned in her bed, squirming with the covers pulled over her head. She woke up with a start in the middle of the night, as a noise echoed down past the flickering lights. It sounded like footsteps going thump… thump… thump… and something in the closet tapping bump… bump… bump… Violet pulled her covers even tighter, when all of the sudden the room got a little brighter. A man was sitting by the foot of her bed, with a heartwarming smile, and eyes a bright red. As he sat up tall, the bed gave a slight creek, and letting out a chuckle the man began to speak.

“Hello child, I’m The Boogeyman. Your personal monster,” the creature began. “You look very frightened my little one, there’s no need for that, I’m only here for fun.”

“Fun?” She whimpered

And “Fun!” He replied, grinning a smile so impossibly wide. “I’m here to show you a world of magic, a place away from your world so tragic! A beautiful place without the troubles of school, without bullies or teachers or your parent’s awful rule. Would you like to go?”

“I don't know…” Her mind drifting to and fro, as the creatures eyes were still aglow.

“Take my hand, it’s just that easy.” But Violet still felt very uneasy.

“What about momma and pappa, mister? Or my little baby brother, or my big sister?”

“Oh don't you worry your little head, when we’re all done, you’ll be right back in your bed.” With that, Violet had nothing to fear, so she took his hand and they disappeared. When she opened her eyes, she was in a world painted red, with the wild eyed creature pulling her further ahead.

“Welcome to my home!” He triumphantly said, as further and deeper down the path he lead. Violet had time to take in her surroundings, and what she saw was truly astounding. Everything, the trees, the path, and the sky seemed to be covered in a red colored dye.

“Where are we going?” Violet uttered, as a cool blowing breeze flowing by made her shudder.

“To see my world from a tower so tall, when we’re high on the tower we will see it all!”

But something was strange that she couldn't quite ignore, she swore she’d seen these trees before. Finally they began to climb the tower, they climbed so long, for hours and hours. But she had no time to complain because the red eyed beast had just came to a pause.

“Jeez mister, are we at the top already?” Said Violet, feeling very unsteady.

“Why yes we are, we’ve reached the top. Take a look around, but mind the drop.”

“Wow Mister, you can see really far!”

“Yes indeed young one, just look at the stars”

“Oooh! Mister you’re right! It’s a really clear night!”, but Violet began to feel something wasn’t right.

Violet’s could spy something fly by, it was a bright white ball up in the sky.

“Uhm Mister? What’s that over there way up high?”

“Oh that? Heh heh heh. That’s an eye.”

Violet froze and turned around slowly, only to be stared at by something unholy. Violet shrieked and ran down the stairs, with the red eyed creature yelling after her upstairs.

“Violet dear, there’s nothing to fear! The eye is up there, and we’re down here!”

Poor little Violet kept running and running, but the horrible creature was much too cunning. The monster hopped over the railing in a bound and caught Violet in his arms on the ground.

Violet kicked and wailed and shrieked, but the creature's hold was in no way weak.

“Let me go! I want to go home!”

The creature replied with an annoyed groan. “‘I want to go home! I want to go home!’ Where’s the fun and excitement without somewhere new to roam?”

“This isn't fun! This is terribly scary!” and at that the creature seemed a lot less merry.

“What do you mean? I don't understand, I thought you were having fun in this magical land.”

“Fun? No I’ve been scared since this started”, and at that the creature was even more brokenhearted.

“Alright Violet I understand, I see this hasn't gone as I planned. I’ll take you home to your warm bed, free from this place that’s filled you with dread.”

And with that, behind them appeared a door, and laying down in her bed, Violet was left in peace to snore.
