The Generation Of Sheep

The Generation Of Sheep

A Poem by Sarah Ahmed

(Unedited/unfinished)

The issue with society today is that all we care about is lust
We try to act like the old generations, but sadly we can't adjust
These mindless hypocrites out there will dare to preach and then trust
So long as they inform others it's wrong, for them then it's just
Place your book of morals back on your shelf and let it catch dust
You're not fooling anyone but yourself with your game and disgust
I'm so sick of these lies that make my mind want to combust
Just leave your morality behind to olden and rust

You're better off without it, but you'll highly doubt it
You want to discuss morality? Let's talk about it
Let's talk about how you as an artist would portray yourself
Playing with minds at the ages of twelve
But I guess I'm twelve if I don't dress like a w***e
And I guess I'm two if I haven't had sex before
I guess I'm twenty if I spend my time drinking
And maybe I'm zero if I ever start thinking

I have no purpose if I ever use my brain
And if my life isn't dictated then my life is in vain
If we now were to speak in all honesty
Provocative pride is our new modesty
Where's the freedom of will that we pled for so long?
Revealing your skin makes you empowered and strong?
Now tell me it's your life and you'll do as you like
But remember this when your kids will watch and learn your mistake

Don't try to excuse yourself because you're an old adult
Children are influenced by you, so you're at fault
But I guess even if we run or even if we hide
We'll always be exposed, whether out or inside
I reminisce the days one would walk out with no worry
Now from each destination I feel as though I must hurry
This was merely our doing, arresting fate and charging luck
Pity to some in the old times who see the young and are vastly struck

Shaming and degrading, drugging for good times
Why can't you spend your leisure without committing some crimes?
It's all about the pleasure and living it up
But your pleasure is jail, so start giving it up
These sick alluring trends have come as nothing but crude
Is this how our generation really wants to be viewed?
Selling your body for a thousand dollar treasure
Trading your dignity knowing nothing else can measure

You're breaking your backbone and you're dealing your soul
Our society is slowly dying without anyone's control
Not a sole being sees that demolition is ease
We're taking a liking to this mad disease
And if I'm not a follower of the generation of sheep
Then they'll chase after me until I permanently sleep
I'll kill the life ahead of me and I'll murder my youth
For I won't live for a lie, but I would die for the truth

I just gotta say upfront: I love it when, in the midst of a world of artistic brevitas and equally short attention spans, a poet takes the time to write out forty lines with a guesstimated average of ten words a line. So high kudos on that.

(Now I'll actually read the poem...)

If "rant" were a genre, this would be one of the best examples. And I'm not be sarcastic. You use some well-crafted form and structure (1) to support some solid imagery (2) along with excellent use of some effective poetic devices (3): all of which play to the favor of the persona's emotion.

(1) Form and Structure? I mean the stanzas of eight lines, the end rhymes, and at least some flicker of rhythm all connected by the thread of discontent.

(2) Solid Imagery? I mean all the little scenes and vignettes of generation Y life.

(3) Poetic Devices? I specifically mean the repetition in the second stanza ("I guess...I guess...") And this stanza, because of those last four lines, is my favorite stanza from the whole poem because of that repetition. It showcases the downward spiral that younger generations take (but haven't they/we always?).

Because this piece stirs me so much, it gets a 100 from me.

I have a great weakness for revolutionary rants. Words that are used to make us realize what world we really live in.

''Place your book of morals back on your shelf and let it catch dust''

Great line, I got all excited inside when I read that one, thinking, THIS IS GONNA BE GOOOOOD !

And then... this.

''But I guess I'm twelve if I don't dress like a w***e
And I guess I'm two if I haven't had sex before
I guess I'm twenty if I spend my time drinking
And maybe I'm zero if I ever start thinking''

Beautifully put.. This more or less sums up our generation and pop-culture. And the pace. Everything reads itself so incredibly well. You have so many witty and well-thought out lines that I should basically just quote your whole piece. :P

I'm very impressed by your work, not just this one. You are a visionary !
