"Who Are We Really?"

"Who Are We Really?"

A Poem by Sarah Ahmed

"Are we really who we are because of our own choices, or by the choices we are born into?". -Anonymous

I've permitted my vision to see by the voices
Of those who have birthed the empowering choices
Trust to their word, it's best I have heard
Fear is my life when the truth has been blurred

The teaching and preaching is reaching my mind
Insightful and rightful are those of my kind
The fateful and hateful are only of mine
But I won't admit that a servant's divine

Worship discomfort and knock every wonder
You're dirt in the sky and won't find what is under
Question your purpose and what it is your way
Your soul is at service for those led astray

Indeed all our laws are in need of a pause
You'll realize why every love is the cause
That peace can't be war, and war can't be peace
We swear by the truth when our bodies decease

You hold your head high and yet try to deny
To why we are clueless of who we live by
You're mute when you're loud, you're dead when you're proud
You speak as a puppet who's lost in the crowd

Before you stand tall on the highest pillar
Distance yourself from your blood of a killer
My mind is a child that's playing much silly
But I can't help to ask, who are we really?

Your poem inspired me to write this tiny gift poem for you to keep as your own: It’s in /0/0/0/ seven syllable meter:

Puppets

As we’re dancing on our strings,
we believe they’re really wings
that enable us to fly
to a Heaven when we die
where bright angels sing on swings
far above where devils fry.

I'm really loving your rhyme scheme in this piece. You are a very good writer, using a lot of description in your poetry. Keep writing!
