Ella went home and put on the red dress that Ray had requested she wear. She slipped into some black pumps and walked over to his house. Ringing the doorbell the maid answered.

“He’s waiting for you in the dining room.” she said smiling at her for the first time. Ella made her way to the dining room to see the table beautifully decorated.

“Wow.” she said to herself as she sat down. A moment later Ray came out of the kitchen and gave her some water to drink.

He himself sat down and the maid brought in the salad.

“You made all this yourself?” Ella asked his in disbelief. There was a salad with homemade dressing, a fish smothered in lemon and butter, and for desert a fruit tart. Ray smiled at her. “When I said extravagant I meant a veggie dog or a sandwich.” she said smiling back at him.

“I’m glad I exceeded your expectations.” he replied sipping his water.

“I feel bad.” Ella said.

“Why?” he asked concerned.

“Because you did all this for me and I never did anything for you.” she replied.

“It’s okay, you guys making it into BOTB was good enough.” he replied smiling.

All her life Ella had searched for the perfect boy and had her heart ripped out every time, so she just gave up looking. But it looks like the perfect boy had found her.

Evan was of course devastated at first that the engagement had been broken but he looked at it positively for the most part. I mean he was young and he still had his whole life to be engaged so he could wait. If it was with Mandy that would be great but if it was with some one else that would be alright too.

Sanger of course quit his stage of depression and moved on to greater things. The band was doing very well in the competition. Sanger was always made fun of in high school but he was looking forward to going to college and getting made fun of there too.

Joel had been having a hard time with his father about colleges but eventually gave in. He would become a doctor and there was nothing that his father could do about it but support him.

Graduation day had finally shown its ugly face. Ella and Joel were in the crowd watching there best friends officially become adults. They were free and could go and explore the world now. They were so proud of their friends for graduating and getting into good colleges.

“I’m officially a high school graduate!” Sanger shouted as he exited the gym. “I feel like a man!” he declared.

“I know what you mean.” Ray said laughing.

“Finally Sanger decides to act like a man.” Evan said nudging him.

“You boys look funny in those robes.” Ella said walking up to them and congratulating them.

“How does it feel to be free?” Joel asked them.

“Good.” Evan said walking with them to the Dinner Diner.

All of them sat down in a booth and ordered their food and milkshakes.

“Those gowns were itchy.” Sanger complained as he took it off and threw it down next to him.

“We graduated.” Evan said.

“Yes, I am fully aware of that.” Ray replied throwing a French fry at him.

“What was that for?” Evan asked throwing on back.

“Oh, French fry war.” Sanger said throwing one at Joel.

“Guys, guys, I don’t think this is anyway for high school graduates to act.” Ella replied shaking her finger at them. Ray looked at Evan then back at Ella. Before she knew it she had a mouth full of French fries jammed into her mouth. “Not nice.” Ella pouted after swallowing.

“Ella, I think you’re turning into Sanger.” Joel joked.

“What?” Ella and Sanger said at the same time.

“My point.” Joel said leaning back into the booth in satisfaction.

Ugh, full.” Sanger whined as they exited the diner just in time for the rain to start pouring down.

“Hey, it’s a rainy day kids!” Joel exclaimed.

“No, it’s the rainy day kids.” Ella said smiling.

A month later, it was now the end of June and the end of the two month long contest. The band was currently almost to another state because the venue they were in was about five hours away. They were going on stage to perform for the last time. They had no idea how many points they had or how many anyone else had. All they knew was that they had to give the performance of their lives tonight. Gathering into a huddle they listened to the roar of the crowd as the band before them finished their song. They did their before stage ritual and high-five each other once more before getting on the stage. They all could feel the rush of adrenaline they were getting from being on stage. Starting their song they danced around and played to crowd with such energy. They started competing with the crowd’s loudness as they were singing along with their song.

After their performance they gathered in the backstage hall. Sophomore had taken the stage and they decided to not watch them this night. They had watched them every night of the competition and had become really close friends with them. Ray met with them as they sat in silence and waited for the performances to be over.

In an hour the staff had tallied up the scores of every band and had come to a decision. Ella squeezed Ray and Joel’s hands as they waited for the results. Sanger was holding his breath and Evan looked as if he were about to faint. They could feel the tense anxiousness of everybody in the room. There were all kinds of people here. Some were going to use this competition to launch their careers and some were in it for the glory. Others were in it for the money or possible for the experience. But they were here for all that and more. They were here in hopes that this competition would change and improve their lives. They had so much riding on this competition that they had no idea what they would do if something went wrong. Sophomore stood beside them looking just as nervous. The people who organized this competition had decided to throw in a recording deal with a studio. Even though it wasn’t a huge well known studio at least you would get some kind of recognition for making an album if you had chosen to.

Feeling the knots in their stomach tighten they watched as the host appeared on the stage. He carried an unopened envelope in his hands. Ella just wanted to jump up their and rip it open and see who the winner was already but Ray and Joel restrained her. The man took his time opening it and then finally began to speak.

“This competition has been hard and long and we are so very happy to have found so many people this passionate about music. And the winner of the Battle of the Bands and the recording contract is…”

The End.
