Trevor made his way downstairs in the morning. It was about 10 in the morning. He walked into the kitchen to see his brother Alex sitting at the table staring at an envelope.

“Have you opened it?” Trevor asked.

“No.” he replied not taking his eyes off the paper.

“What are you waiting for?”

“I don’t know.” his brother said carefully opening the letter.

Sophomore! You have been approved to compete at the Battle of the Bands. There are several things that you have to have before the contest starts.

  1. A demo CD
  2. Your own equipment
  3. a front man
  4. posters

Remember to start practicing!

Alex read the letter aloud then once more to himself. The toaster strudel he had put in the toaster had popped up once he got done.

“So we’re in.” Trevor clarified.

“We should tell the guys.” Alex said enjoying his breakfast.

Once all of Sophomore found out that they had gotten in they began to practice. That whole Saturday they sat there writing tunes and brushing up on their skills. They really needed this.

“Chaser, why don’t you call Neon Lights and see if they got in?” Matt said after tuning his guitar.

“Kay.” Chase grabbed his cell and dialed Ella’s number.

“Hello?” Ella answered.

“Did you get in?” Chase asked.

“No.” Ella lied.

“Really that must suck, but we got in!” Chase answered.

“Cool.” Ella said sounding bummed.

“You guys seriously didn’t get in.” he said.

“You know I’m lying through my teeth.” Ella laughed.

“Awesome, I have to go practice is waiting. Oh, and Matt says hi.” he said before hanging up.

Evan decided on skipping his family game night to go to practice. Ever since his brother went to college his dad had been watching way too much TV and had gotten the ridiculous idea that they should have a game night. Evan really didn’t like the idea so he came up with ways to avoid it and tonight was just another game night without him.

“Hey, guys sorry I’m late.” he said walking in and kissing Mandy before going to set up.

“Family game night?” Joel asked.

“Yup.” He replied.

Ray, Mandy, Hayley, and Serena sat down on the couch in Ray’s game room where they currently practiced. Ray had dragged Hayley to this practice for no reason. Mandy just wanted to see her boyfriend and Sanger insisted that Serena come enjoy the fun.

After about six songs they decided to take a break. Sanger ran over to Serena and trapped her in a tight hug. At first Serena struggled a little to get out of his arms but then understood that he had no intention of letting go. Hayley had fallen asleep on Ray’s lap. Ray carried her up to his room and set her on his bed so she could sleep more peacefully.

“Evan, you promised we’d go to the movies after practice.” Mandy pouted.

“We are.” Evan said goodbye to his band mates and walked out the door with Mandy.

“Me and Serena should get going too. She has a curfew.” Sanger replied picking Serena up bridal style and carrying her towards his car.

“So I guess that leaves just you and me, huh?” Ray said picking up an empty soda can and throwing it in the trash.

Ella walked over to Joel’s drums and began to play.

“You should have been a drummer.” Ray said.

“I like bass better. Oh, you have a keyboard!” Ella said running over to the keyboard and playing it.

“You know I’m sorry about the other day. You know when I kissed you. I didn’t mean to, I mean I meant to I just didn’t- anyways I just wanted to apologize.” Ella just kept playing. She didn’t want to hear it. “Ella, please I just wanted to talk.” Ray begged her. Ella immediately stopped playing.

“You want to talk about you not meaning to kiss me? Like you tripped and my lips just happened to break your fall?” she retorted.

“No, it was a mistake and I won’t do it again I was just caught up in the moment.”

“It was a mistake! It was a mistake! Nobody made you make that mistake! You chose to make it so it can’t be a mistake because you chose it!” she shouted.

“Well maybe I regret choosing it!” he shouted.

“You know what that kiss was a mistake, this band was a mistake, and you Ray, you are a mistake.” she said running out the door. “All I want is to be happy and loved. I guess some people just aren’t that lucky.” she said to herself as she started her lonely walk home.

Evan and Mandy didn’t go to the movies that night. They decided to go to Mandy’s house for some quality time.

“I love you.” Evan said.

“I love you too.” Mandy said kissing him.

“If I become a famous Rockstar would you love me?” he asked.

“Yes, but there shall be no groupies.”

“Well, then I guess you can’t be my groupie.”

“Only if I’m your only groupie.” Mandy said leading him towards her bedroom.

Sanger dropped Serena off at her house and began to drive home. He stopped at a stop sign and saw a figure walking down the road in front if him. He drove off and stopped in front of the girl.

“Ella! Get in.” he said. Ella climbed in. “Hey, what’s wrong?” he asked her after noticing that she had been crying.

“I quit the band.” she replied.

“Why?” Sanger asked sympathetically.

“Ray.” she said facing him.

“Look, Ray is our friend and manager, but we can always get a new manager. I’m sure Ray would understand. Ella, we need you. You can’t quit on us now I mean after all we’ve accomplished.” he said hugging her.

“Thanks, Anger. I guess I just need some time to clear my head.”

“Just think that it’s all for the music.” Sanger said. “I’ll drive you back home.”

When Sanger got back to his own house he decided to call Trevor. They had been talking a lot lately and he wanted to find out if they had a demo yet.

“Who were you talking to?” asked Alex as he came into his brother’s room.

“Sanger, he wanted to know if we had a demo yet.” he replied.

“Oh, I have no idea how we are going to get that demo.” Alex said sitting down on Trevor’s bed.

“Me too.”

Evan made it home in time before his mother grounded him for staying out so late. His curfew was 1 and it was about 1:30, so he had to find a way to sneak in. Evan climbed a tree that faced his brother’s window. He made his way through the window and into the house. He went into his room and got in bed.

“Evan Allen Becks!” he heard his mother say to him.

“Hi, mom.” he replied sitting up in his bed.

“You’re late.” his mother inquired.

“Yeah, about that.”

“You know the rules. No evening fun.” she said walking out. So now he couldn’t stay out at night.

Ray knew Hayley wouldn’t wake up soon so he decided to go up to his room. Might as well take a nap right? He climbed into the bed with Hayley and put his arm around her. He liked this arrangement and soon began to drift into sleep.

“Ray, wake up.” Hayley said nudging him gently.

“What?” he asked his eyes still closed.

“It’s 9 in the morning and I can’t figure out how to turn your alarm off.” she said putting the alarm clock to his ear.

“Ah! Okay, fine.” he said sitting up and turning the alarm off.

“Why do you even have an alarm clock you sleep through it anyway.” she laughed.

“Yeah, I’m going to go get some breakfast you stay here.” he said getting up.

“Oh, breakfast in bed. How classy of you.” Hayley said turning on the TV.

Ray walked downstairs and said good morning to his parents. He got in the kitchen and made two bowls of cereal and took them up to his room. He handed one bowl to Hayley.

“Cinnamon Toast Crunch?” Hayley laughed.

“Yeah, I like the prize you get in the box.” he said turning up the volume.

“Ray! And Hayley!” Sanger said barging in.

“Hey, why does everyone keep breaking into my house?” Ray asked Hayley. She shrugged and kept eating her breakfast.

“I brought donuts!” Sanger said throwing the bag at Ray. Hayley took a donut out and started eating it.

“Hm, cereal and a donut for desert. I should sleep over more often, Ray.” she said smiling at him.

“Yeah, you should.”

“Wait a second, Hayley slept over!” Sanger said.

“Yup.” Ray turned to the volume down this time.

“Hayley slept over! Hayley slept over!” Sanger started to sing.

“Who slept over?” Ray’s mother asked from the hall.

“Sanger, mom, Sanger slept over.” he replied.

“Oh, hi Sanger.” his mom said.

“Keep quiet.” Ray said to Sanger.

“Oh, looks like your Ray’s dirty little secret.” Sanger said to Hayley.
