Pom Queens, Chapter 1

Chapter 1

“Bye, Mom!” Kay practically jumped out of her mom’s car. It was her first day at Mount Leverend High School, and she wasn’t nervous. Why would she be? She had no problem making friends. For once, she ignored everyone around her, heading straight for the entrance. 

“You must be new here,” a brunette in a convertible said. “I’m Lydi.”

Kay’s blonde ponytail whipped around her face as she turned to face the direction of the voice.

“Kaylynn. But you can call me Kay.” 

“Nice to meet you,” Lydi said.

“Hey, who’s this?” another girl called. 

“Kay. I’m new here.”

“Cool. I’m Zalista.” 

A third girl, slightly heavyset, approached them. “Desiree.” She turned to Lydi. “Will Klaina be okay with this?”

“Oh, she’ll be fine,” Lydi said, smiling mischievously.

I could get away with it, were Lydi’s first thoughts heading inside. I’m popular enough. Or would it ruin it? she debated. 

“You’re being awfully quiet,” Des remarked. She was the organizer for the group and kept Klaina’s schedule. They each had a role in the group. Klaina was the leader. Klaina genuinely liked Melissa. Zalista was in at Lydi’s request, and mostly-in Lydi’s opinion-gave the group some balance. And Lydi...? Well, she was Klaina’s right-hand girl, especially when she felt...curious. She didn’t mind. 

But Kay was different. She was cute. A little bit too desperate, maybe. But adorable, nonetheless. Something was different with her than with Klaina, but she couldn’t say what.
