A Soldier's Life

A Soldier's Life

A Poem by Xander West

In the middle of crystal clear night,

In the middle nowhere, heading somewhere,

In the middle of what seems to be a never ending fight,

Fighting to survive, fighting to stay alive,

That is just the beginning of a soldier's life.

Fighting a war of colliding prides,

Our greatest enemy is not the man who hides,

But the refusal to see each other's sins,

The refusal to see from the other's eyes,

Nobody is ever going to be completely right,

Until everyone accepts these simply facts,

Peace will always be just out of sight,

Yet, even knowing all of this,

I still choose to live a soldier's life.

It's not easy to watch any man die,

When you think of the lives who feel the pain,

A sonless mother asking why,

A grieving wife who will never hold her lover again,

An innocent child who will never begin to understand,

Yet we still choose to live a soldier's life,

To protect those precious few who we love,

For it's their love that keeps us alive,

It's for those precious few

Whom we stand up for and fight.

Wow. This moved me to tears. People take for granted what all our service men and women do for us, and how much they suffer, too. I am a huge supporter of our country's soldiers, and I want to say thank you for your service. God bless!

It goes through cycles. However lately, the cycles are longer and more frequent.
Really rather wonderful. Very moving and heartfelt.

I wonder if you have ever read Rudyard Kipling, if you haven't you might want to seek out his soldiers poems.
