Abortion - The War Within Our Borders EssayA by Carrie OttYet another essay of mine, one I've been wanting to write for quite a while. This topic in particular is a passionate one for me. Is America in a war about abortion? Should we support the aborting of babies? What about special circumstances?
Abortion - The War Within Our Borders
Essay by Carrie Ott
Today’s article will be longer than most others, I suspect – abortion is one topic which I can passionately argue against. And, as usual, I am not afraid of angry or hateful comments. I will say what I feel is right, even if it means slapping a few people’s ideas across the face. As a Christian, I am wholesale, 100%, against abortion. And I’ll explain why throughout the course of this article. But, I will also be answering many common questions – are they actually ‘babies’ before they are born? Do they have rights? What about a mother’s rights? What about cases of rape? Is abortion okay sometimes? Many people, I feel, have many fair and honest questions that need to be addressed. Well, let’s get started then.
I’ll start by picking out one of the above questions. “Is abortion okay sometimes?” Of course, you already know that my personal answer is no. But, why do I say that? Because I am one who believes that the child is a baby the moment it is conceived. None of this ‘well before two months they’re just fleshy chunks in a mother’s womb’ kind of thing. And, let me pull out my handy Bible and pick out another one of my favorite verses for you. “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee” (Jeremiah 1:5 KJV). Or, as the New International Version puts it, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart” (Jer. 1:5 NIV). God new each person individually before they were even conceived. We were each a ‘person’ before our biological mother and father even met each other. Thus, we remain a person when we are conceived. So those who are pro-abortion cannot convince me that a baby is just a “chunk of flesh.”
Now, with that said, we return once again to my original question. “Is abortion okay sometimes?” With the knowledge that one who is conceived is actually a person, then we go ahead and willfully end that person’s life. Let me take a moment to look up the word murder. The Cambridge dictionary defines it as “the crime of intentionally killing a person.” I don’t know about you, but to me that seems remarkably similar to the situation I just described, since abortion is done willfully to someone we have already designated as a person. The Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines murder as “to kill or slaughter inhumanly or barbarously.” Using saline and suction to remove a mature baby’s brain seems particularly inhuman and barbarous to me. Thus, we have qualified abortion as legitimate murder.
While I leave your mind mulling on my previous point until the end of the article, let me expound it a little more by detailing another question that I’ve already answered. “Are they actually babies before they’re born?” As I have already answered, yes, they are. But, I want to show you what the world says that they are – many people need to be told things like this. As some scientists have said, they are “chunks of tissue.”
“A gobbet of meat protruding from a human womb.”
“A part of the mother’s body.”
“Unwanted fetal tissue.”
“The product of conception.”
There are three in particular that really burn me. One fetus was said to be a “subhuman non-person.” Another, amazingly, was simply called “so much garbage.” And finally, one child got the title of a “defective life.” The things that people say today never cease to amaze me. We are fitting knob and turn into a pattern set, surprisingly, by Nazi Germany. In concentration camps, two things happened to the Jews –
· They were destroyed as a legal entity
· Their individuality was taken
Now, let’s compare those two things to modern day abortion.
· Babies’ legal rights as a group of people have been destroyed with the Supreme Court decision to legalize abortion in 1974.
· Babies as individuals are not recognized – they are simply seen as “unwanted fetal tissue” or some such thing.
How frightening to think that so many people can scoff at Nazi Germany and yet
carry on a legacy just as cruel. People, examine yourselves!
So, now I hear you ask “What about the mother’s rights?” You are very correct
there. She does have the right to abort her child. I won’t argue about that; there’s nothing to argue. What I want to point out is, despite her having a right, she also has a responsibility. Titus 2:4 puts it nicely - that women need to “love their husbands and children.” Her responsibility is to love those children. Besides, “Children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward” (Psalm 127:3). If God is the giver of children, who are we to show Him up and get rid of those children? Children are rewards, not fleshy lumps meant to be killed whenever we please. A mother does have legal rights to abort, but she has no spiritual/moral grounds whatsoever to stand on. Remember, she has a responsibility!
The next question, for me, is easily the toughest to answer – mostly because the answer just doesn’t work for people who don’t care a bit about God. “What about cases of rape?” Once again, we go back to the mother having full legal right but no spiritual right to abort the baby. Also, we must remember that the fetus is actually a person. Who are we to kill this person just because he was not conceived the way the mother had originally planned? The strongest thing one has to remember is that God’s will is the prevalent factor, even in a case like this. And that, for agnostics and atheists, is the hardest pill to swallow. I understand that. However, if a woman has been raped but feels she cannot take care of the baby, there are plenty of places willing to take the child for adoption. But it seems, unfortunately, that few think of that option. So even in cases of rape, I feel that there is no excuse for aborting the child.
Finally, we return to the question at the crux of this article. Is abortion right? Hopefully with what I’ve shown, you’ll see that it’s not. But, I do understand that not everyone will be persuaded. And you know what? There’s nothing I can do about that – it’s the Holy Spirit’s ministry now. But consider the facts carefully; wouldn’t you disagree with abortion if you were that unborn child?
In conclusion, I want to remind you, my friends, that we are in a war here. Of course, the war in the Middle East. But I’m talking right here, in our own borders, our own neighborhoods. Let me show you some startling comparisons –
Black Slaves / Unborn Children
The Dred Scott case for African American rights in 1857 failed, 7 votes to 2.
The Roe v. Wade case for Unborn Children's rights in 1974 failed, 7 votes to 2.
African Americans had the legal status of a non-person.
The unborn have the legal status of a non-person.
African Americans were the property of their owner, (the slave owner).
Unborn children are the property of their owner (the mother).
Slave owners had the choice to keep, buy, sell, or kill slaves.
Mothers have the choice to keep or kill children.
People said that “abolitionists should not impose morality on slave owners."
People say that “pro-lifers should not impose morality on mothers.”
Thus, slavery was legal.
Thus, abortion is legal.
There was a war to end slavery.
We are in that war to end abortion.
