Old Lane Sign

Old Lane Sign

A Poem by Trace
"

Did I spell that wrong? Oh Well..... Happy New Year

"

T’was but a short and winding lane

That led down a shady way

Often used when folks came a-callin

In those old begotten days,

T’was barely wide enough for

One horse and buggy then

Cleared by hand and sweat of brow

To the shanty on the glen,

T’was cherished by the young and old

For wandering hand in hand

Love was found on springtime strolls

And families tended the land,

T’was a saddened day forgotten

The last of the clan had passed

When no one came down the shady lane

As the shadows forever cast,

T’was but a short and winding trace

That now is hard to find

For all that’s left of the memories made

Is the weathered  “Old Lane Sign”

No, I think you spelled "Old Lane Sign" just fine. I like the repetition of Twas throughout...one of my favorite features. I like the allusions to horses and buggies, clans, and families strolling down "Old Lane." It makes me wonder what we have left behind in the name of "progress," what lies among the dirt and dust on "Old Lane?" Will we ever know?

Nicely penned. A simple concept, but not done in a trivial manner...

dear Trace, Old Lane is a memory that lingers in your mind.
Apple trees yield delicious pies and spring water falls
quench your thirst. Blossoms burst and hearts are happy.
Truly a memory made to keep. Beautiful poetry. Your friend, Pat

I found it a wonderful little play on words and a bittersweet read. This would make a great little song.

A lane we are privileged to travel each year :) I enjoyed this, Trace! As for the spelling - my maiden name is Lange; when we were teenagers, my siblings and I gave our father a placard to carry around on New Year's Eve which read "Old Lange's Sign". Thanks goodness he was a good sport! :)

When I was young.... (stop laughing.... I know it was a long time ago)
I thought the words were: "Old Lane Sign"
And I am not sure what pulled that back to the present exce of when I hear that song
I would always sing it as old lane sign just for kicks.

So I thought...... I should write about that old lane sign and make it about memories
And forgotten places.

Happy New Year.

Actually, I think it's Auld Lang Syne...I've had to look it up on occasion. It always gets me teary eyed whenever I hear it.

I love the melancholy in this one, it simply tugs at the heart.

My best,
Kelly

I often wonder, who once walked this path. Those faded forest walks. Lovely sentiment here, well done
