The "Snowman" poemA Poem by TraceThe first poem I memorized and recited.
When I was but a child, maybe five or so At Christmas time, mom taught me a poem The first one I learned to recite by myself And on Christmas Eve I stood all alone
My knees were shaking as I tried to talk But I wanted so much to tell The poem that I had practiced for hours And I had it memorized so well,
So I mustered up the courage I stood up tall and straight I saw my snowman outside the window And the words would no longer wait:
“Once there was a snowman Stood outside the door Thought he would like to come inside And play about the floor
Thought he would like to warm himself By the fire bright Thought that he could snuggle up In the big feather bed at night
So he called the North Wind Help me now I pray I’m completely frozen Standing here all day
So the North wind came along And blew him inside the door And now there is nothing left of him But a puddle on the floor”
Everybody laughed and clapped their hands Mommy smiled and kissed my head Then we all got to open just one present Before we each got tucked in to bed
As usual, I was the first up on Christmas morning And it was always way before dawn That North Wind must have blown all night Because when I looked outside, my snowman was gone.
