Chapter One

A Chapter by Bunny

I felt a tug on my backpack as I walked towards my biology class in the B hall, getting jerked to a stop as I turned and looked. There stood my best friend, Snow, with a backpack and her schedule in her hand. My eyes widened as I processed what was going on and suddenly she threw her arms around me tightly, laughing as I hugged her back in shock.

“Snow?! What are you doing here? I thought you went to some charter school?” I said. She laughed and shook her head as she held up her schedule for me to see. My eyes widened in disbelief as I read through it. She had the exact same schedule as me. Arching an eyebrow, I looked at her then just smiled as I hugged her tightly. I wasn’t going to question it. “Did Leah make sure you have my schedule?”

“Of course, she wouldn’t let me come here unless she knew I’d be with you all the time. Not that I can really blame her of course because of what happened at the other school. But yeah, I have your schedule. So let’s go to biology?” she said. I nodded and took her hand as I walked with her to biology, unable to believe that she was really here at my school with me and that we had all the same classes. It wasn’t even like that in middle school. We had about two classes together. This was just absolutely great. I smiled as we walked to biology, ignoring all the dirty looks that we got from people. I honestly didn’t care. Snow was beside me at school and we had all the same classes. That was good enough for me.

            “Rayne, is biology hard?”

“Not really. But I can help you. Just make sure you pay attention in class, OK?”

            “OK.”

With that, we walked in silence from the library to the B hall. Lots of people gave us weird and dirty looks though we didn’t even acknowledge them. When we got to B hall, I smiled softly. I let her go into the classroom first then walked up to my teacher, Ms. V.

“Ms. V, we have a new student. Can she please sit with me? I swear that we’ll behave. Please, Ms. V, I am begging you here,” I said. She looked at Snow’s schedule then shrugged and nodded. I smiled, extremely happy. She was a really cool teacher, though if you didn’t pass her class she can get really nasty. I led Snow to my table and she sat down next to me. As if he knew, Christian walked in and walked up to his seat, looking down at Snow angrily.

“You’re in my seat. Move it,” he said. She looked at him, looking slightly frightened though she hid it well. I stood up quickly, very angry.

“Christian, you don’t talk to her like that. She is my best friend and if I ever find out that you bully her you’re going to regret it a thousand times over. Do you understand me?” I said. He looked at me and then moved so he was right in front of me, our chests almost touching. He was about a head taller than me, though he didn’t intimidate me. I glared at him, not in the mood for him to be mean to Snow. She gently pulled on my sleeve and spoke softly.

“Rayne, I don’t mind moving… I just don’t want to be far from you.”

I shook my head as I looked down at her, smiling softly. She seemed so scared and nervous since it was her first day here, so I did my best to comfort her with Christian breathing down my neck and probably looking down my shirt. I picked up a hand and gently stroked her long, black hair that I cut mine like. It was really pretty. Smiling, I leaned down and kissed the top of her head.

“Snow, honey, you won’t be moving. Christian will be moving across the table to sit across from me right now,” I said, turning to look up at Christian as I said that. He sighed and then slunk over to the other side of the table, throwing down his bag and then sitting in the chair angrily. I nodded and sat back down, taking Snow’s hand in mine as I patted it. “Don’t you worry about anything. I’m going to make sure that you’re OK. I am willing to fist fight the principal to make sure you’re OK and you stay with me, alright?”

She nodded and then pulled out a journal and wrote Biology on it as I pulled out my blue biology notebook. Christian watcher her quietly, wondering who she was to me. I hummed softly as I started working on my warm up. It was the same thing that I hummed every morning. It was In the End by Black Veil Brides. Snow started to hum along with me and Christian’s eye’s widened a little.

“You know what she’s humming? I ask her every day and she says I should listen to better music,” he said. She laughed and nodded a little bit as she kept humming, starting on the warm up. I smiled softly at Snow, glad she had showed me the song. It was such a beautiful song; really, it’s such a nice song. After a few minutes, we all finished the warm up and immediately Christian started to bother Snow with questions. “What’s your favorite color? How do you know Rayne? How old are you? Why did you just come here now? Why are you so quiet? Why did your parents name you after snow? Have you ever seen snow? How tall are you? Do you have a boyfriend?”

I smacked him and shook my head as I glanced at Snow, who seemed frightened by all of his sudden questions. I rubbed her arm gently as I smiled at her, trying to calm her down at least a little bit. After that I glared at Christian and shook my head.

“Leave her alone, jerk. Can’t you see that she’s terrified? It’s her first day at a new school. She doesn’t need you bombing her with questions. So leave her alone or you’re going to have to deal with me. Do you understand?” I said as he hung his head. It wasn’t an everyday thing but when I chewed him out about something, he knew it was serious. I hated chewing people out, but when they scared precious little Snow, they’d have to deal with me angry. That is probably not something that they’d like too much.

“It’s OK, Rayne… I don’t mind answer questions... It’sblack and red. I met her in middle school. I’m fifteen. My stepmother got me moved over here. I don’t like talking. I don’t know. No. I have no clue. None of your business.”

I smiled at her, noticing that Christian seemed taken back at her answers and how someone so quiet and sweet looking could have a tongue that stings. She looked at me and smiled back before she looked up so the teacher could check her notebook where her warm up was. After she checked Snow’s she came over and checked mine, giving us both a check. The rest of biology passed with big terms, talking, worksheets, and me resting my head on Snow’s shoulder for a while. She played with my hair gently, causing my eyes to close though I still listened.

The rest of the day passed like this except at lunch I was lying on the floor with my head in her lap as she played with my hair and ate her peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It was a nice day. When school was over, she rode the bus home with me as she would be doing every day and we walked to my room after leaving our bags in the living room. I collapsed on my bed and looked at her, smiling.

“So how was your first day at school?”

“Couldn’t have been better,” she said as she smiled happily at me. I automatically smiled back as I pulled her onto the bed and just hugged her tightly. I had missed her so much and I was really glad she was with me again. I’d never let her go, she’s too good of a best friend.
