Island Life

Island Life

A Poem by WritingTyme

‘Twas the shape of a butterfly with torched wings

Struggling to fly, much like the people

Wings clipped, still grateful and smiling

The ones that breathe the sea breeze

Oh, the smell of the salty air

It clings to the lungs, tickling the nose

Oh, you wouldn’t dare

To leave the island, to grow

See beautiful memories and ruthless ocean waves

The sea rock does freeze time with its ways

Above, space serves a reminder, it wakes

The stars above keep wandering souls company while they wait

Gaze long into the clearest of night skies

A black canvas peppered with speckles of light

The ground glows, illuminated by Earth’s child

Look long and hard across the sea, it is wild

Walk to the towering guiding light

Once man guided man, now the sun guides

These structures stand tall to hold memory

‘Lest we forget the foundations of the

The boys work by day on the water

At night, beach adventures and summer prospects

Catch a moment of sleep

For a night of fun

The cove harbors our vessels, our families

The island cradling the warriors of dawn

Buzzing out, brave souls beware the blue mysteries

In search of green on land from red at sea

At the mart, off-islanders, disparate with a single glance

Eyes meet eyes knowing what lies within, no secrets

The sea rock tells secrets, lies, and romance

Those elements of life that form hidden regrets

To reach the whispering sea rock, ride the prodigious ferry

Atop, the sea breeze will test your mettle

Stay, let the allure of the blue shield carry you

Listen for the green bell’s metal welcome

You’re home
