The Cries of Never Again

The Cries of Never Again

A Poem by Erin
"

Holocaust poem

"

In the midst of a morning

A scream pierced the air

A young child cried softy

Did nobody care?

I watched from my window

As my neighbors were marched

From the only place they knew

Did the Nazis have hearts?

Did the Nazis have families?

Did the Nazis have homes?

Did the Nazis feel love?

Or were the Nazis alone?

The Jews disappeared

One-by-one off our streets

They were forced into the ghetto

They were put there for keeps

Life went on as normal

For the children like me

What could the word “Holocaust” mean to us?

We were blind, we did not yet see.

The war raged on

So did our lives

But what about the eleven million

Sons and daughters and husbands and wives?

Over one million innocent children

Over one million children like me

What does one million look like?

Much to vast for our eyes to see.

In the midst of a morning

Hoorahs filled the air

The children were laughing

And everyone cared.

Now we know of the horrors

That the targeted faced

Now we all cry

For the lives that were disgraced

Now it is over

That war we did win

But we’ll forever hear the cries

Of never again
