Those Christmas Lights

Those Christmas Lights

A Poem by WritersBlock21

Have you ever noticed how tragedy can bring people closer?

I've noticed it within my family.

I never thought it was possible,

But my parents divorce did just that.

We've all been talking more,

Even having family dinners.

Yes, my mom still hates my dad.

That's expected.

But we're all closer in some way.

I don't know if it's the cold weather

Or some unknown force at work,

Either way I like it.

Five months and the feeling warms me.

It feels like the holidays when I was little.

When we'd all sit around before the aunts and uncles came,

Watching the Christmas lights with wonder.

Trying to figure out how little twinkling colors could make us so content.

It's the little things we do now that make me feel five again.

When we eat dinner I am that five year old,

Letting my mind wonder and watching those Christmas lights.

I know exactly where they are placed every year.

If I close my eyes I can set the scene perfectly.

If I close my eyes nothing bad can happen around Christmas.

This is a wonderfully nostalgic piece...things seem so simple at the ignorant bliss of a child. As children we seem to be exempt from worries, only left to wonder why something as simple as Christmas lights wraps us in the warmest security of smiles and love. As sorry as I am to hear your parents divorce, thank you for taking me home for Christmas...at least for a little while:)
