**Stepping off the path**

CHAPTER ONE

"You don’t have to do this alone, you know?  You can always call us if you’re in trouble or if you need anything.  Did you remember to pack""

"Mom, it's only an hour drive from home to my dorm...and I'm pretty sure there are a few stores.  If I forgot something, I'll handle it."  Scarlett Perrault laughed as she cut off her mom's words.  However, she also leaned forward to hug the other woman from behind and place a kiss on her temple.

"I know it's only an hour and I know you'll be fine." Margaret acknowledged as she exchanged a look with her husband.  It was easy to read both the exasperation and affection in his expression.  "Okay, okay.  You two win but if you have forgotten something""

"You'll say 'I told so'.  Yeah, we know Mom!"  Scarlett interrupted again.  Sitting back, she stared out the window of the car.  Trees blurred into a solid line of green colors interrupted by early splashes of yellow, orange, and red as autumn approached " her thoughts sped by at a similar space.  Scarlett’s parents always teased her about living in a fantasy world, but it was hard not to get caught up in her own thoughts.  There was a lot to think about too.  She was finally going to college!

Yes, the university was an easy drive from her parents; however, she would still be living in a dorm by herself.  Well, not by herself, she would have a roommate and a whole dorm full of new friends.  There would be parties, boys, every class imaginable, football games, and study abroad trips.  Scarlett bit her lip to prevent a happy sigh from escaping.

She couldn't wait to see if college could live up to her dreams - dreams that extended well past the next four years.  The world would be hers and she planned to take advantage of it.  She wanted to see everything, do everything, and she wanted to make a difference.  While she hadn't technically worked out just how she was going to do that, Scarlett knew she was going to do it.

"Earth to Scarlett!  We're here!"

Her dad's words jarred Scarlett back to the present and she realized she had spent the entire trip daydreaming.  Giving herself a mental shake, she pulled out the schedule of orientation events.  Without glancing up, she updated her parents.

"We have to check-in at the Administration building.  It's on the west side.  I can't tell""

"Scarlett, get your nose out of the book and look out the window!"  Her mom interrupted impatiently.

Startled into looking up, Scarlett found the sign was hard to miss.  It was the size of a billboard and brightly colored after all.

"I think we can find check-in."  Jonah chuckled as he followed the path of orange arrows as the billboard directed.

Suddenly nervous, Scarlett tugged on her ponytail.  She considered herself average looking despite the gap in her front teeth.  However, she was proud of her wavy brown hair.  It was soft, shiny, and easily styled into whatever was in fashion.  A low ponytail was her favorite choice as it required little effort.  She had put a bit more effort into her make-up.  Normally, she darted out the door with only lip gloss and tinted sun block.  For her first day of college though, she had carefully applied mascara and a plum eye liner to bring out her hazel eyes.  A quick check in the mirror revealed her face looked the same as it had an hour before.  Sighing, Scarlett put away the mirror and focused her attention on the campus.

"Ah, here we go, parking for freshmen orientation."  Jonah announced as he pulled the sedan into an empty space.  "What's the schedule again, Scarlett?"

Scarlett repeated the memorized itinerary as she got out of the vehicle.  "The parent/ student meeting is first and it starts in fifteen minutes.  After that, we can get access to my dorm room and unpack.  Lunch is in the main dining hall and then we split up for different orientation sessions.  You'll finish first, but you won't leave until I'm back, right?"

Scarlett's fast ramble ended when she was forced to take a quick breath.  She met her dad's eyes and then her mom's as she sought reassurance.  College was her dream and she was excited...she was terrified too.

"Of course, we'll wait to see you.  It will give us time to check out the campus or pick up anything we might have forgotten."  Margaret offered with a smile.

Ignoring her mother's gentle teasing, Scarlett replied sincerely.  "Thank you."

Both parents hugged their daughter fiercely.  All three then turned toward the Administration building and blended in with the crowds of parents and students milling about anxiously.

Scarlett's eyes darted around and she reminded herself repeatedly that college was the first step on her path.  She had plans and dreams to change the world and she couldn't do that from parents' house.  Nodding her head in support of her own thoughts, she started walking faster until she was practically dragging her parents forward in her excitement.

"Slow down, girl."  Jonah chastised lightly even as he laughed.  "I'm glad you're out of your head enough to be excited but charging forward won't speed up time."

Nervous, excited laughter bubbled out of Scarlett and she stopped to hug her father.  "I may not be as smart as you, old man, but I might be after four years here.  What do ya think about that?"

"I think it will take you longer than four years." Jonah responded seriously before winking at his daughter fondly.

"Okay, you two, that's enough."  Margaret spoke up mildly.  "We need to stay on schedule and think about now, not four years from now."

Emotion overcame Margaret and she paused to wipe at her eyes.  "This is the start of a grand adventure for you.  You can do anything you want and make a difference in the world.  I'm so proud of you, sweetheart."

Tears swam in Scarlett's eyes as her mother clutched her.  She couldn't get any words over the lump in her throat, but she nodded her appreciation vigorously.  The warm weight of her dad's hand on her back soothed her.  Twisting slightly, she turned and smiled at him.

"I'm proud of you too...even if you aren't as smart as I am."  Suspiciously wet eyes and a serious tone belied his playful words.

"And you know your grandmother is proud of you too, right?  You still have the locket?"  Margaret whispered the questions.

Scarlett pulled the silver chain from around her neck to show the old family locket her grandmother had shined to a brilliant glow before giving it to her as a graduation present.  Her touch was light, reverent as she traced the small heart-shaped pendant.  The words 'To thine own self be true' were etched on the back.  Her grandmother had always supported not just her plans but also her daydreams.  An image of the older woman's wide hazel eyes, so much like her own, flashed in her mind's eyes even as the scent of gingerbread cookies reminded her of the past.  She again nodded several times.

The sweet moment stretched out a few more seconds until they heard raucous laughter.  Turning around, Scarlett saw a group of older boys playing football.  As she watched, one of the boys caught the football and turned her way.  Her breath caught in her chest and she stared at him.  When his eyes met hers, a tingle of awareness danced down her spine.

He looked wildly beautiful " dark, shirtless, sweaty, muscular.  The other players faded into the background.  She saw only him surrounded by trees, flowers, and blue sky.  Something deep inside her shivered at the bold evidence of his primal beauty.

Scarlett's breath whooshed from her chest when his full lips pulled back in a grin before he winked at her.  He then rejoined the other boys and the game continued.

"We are definitely going to be late if we stand around and keep chatting.  Let's get a move on it!"  Margaret commanded.  Both her husband and daughter jumped to obey.

Even as she moved forward, Scarlett still glanced once more over her shoulder for the mystery boy.

CHAPTER TWO

College surpassed Scarlett’s daydreams.  She had settled on a major after only a year and was moving easily on her path toward an early graduation.  For two summers, she had even traveled abroad for month long service projects in Haiti and Mexico.

Her classes in emergency management services had only partially prepared her for the reality of the work.  She had learned what was needed on paper - water supplies, first aid, shelters, work groups, etc.  The reality of fear, blood, and despair had to be experienced to be understood.  It had been rough but rewarding work and it had cemented her desire for her future career.  Whether she worked with Doctors without Borders, the American Red Cross, or another charity, Scarlett was determined to make a difference and help others.  Her goals were in sight as long as she stuck to the path.

The path wasn't so straight and narrow that she didn't have fun though.  She had several best friends, a bigger group of casual friends, and had even dated several boys.  While she did still get lost in her own head sometimes, her best friends understood and still loved her.  A familiar voice pulled Scarlett from her current daydreams.

"Scarlett?  You ready?"  Mandy called out even as she entered the dorm room without knocking.  "You know the couches get taken quickly whenever it's movie night on the Oval!"

"I'm almost ready!  You wanted the pink fuzzy socks, right?"  Scarlett tossed a pair to her friend as she stuffed lip gloss in her pocket.  She took a quick look in the mirror and tugged on her ponytail.  "Let me grab my pillow and we can go."

Linking arms, the girls kept up a steady chatter while walking across campus.  As they neared the oval park, the sounds of excitement reached their ears.  They shared another smile and sped up as Mandy spoke again.

"I wish they had decided to do a romcom marathon instead of apocalyptic theme of zombies but it sounds like the boys are already there and having fun!"  Mandy glanced slyly at Scarlett as she continued.  "Supposedly Grant will be there tonight...should I find another couch?"

Narrowing her eyes while fighting a smirk, Scarlett tightened her grip on Mandy's arm.  "We spoke in World Religions today and, yes, he's sitting with us.  It's not a big deal though.  He's graduating in the spring and moving back home.  There's no future there."

"No future?  Who cares about that?  This is college.  You are supposed to sample."  Mandy laughed as Scarlett blushed.

"Sample does not mean orgy, Mandy!"  Scarlett retorted before she glanced away.  Her breath caught in her chest when she saw him.  A jolt of electricity paused her heart before sending it into overdrive.

He still looked wildly beautiful even with a shirt.  Scarlett's eyes drifted over him - tall, muscular body perfectly attired in dark jeans and a fitted grey sweater.  His dark brown hair was much shorter but his full lips looked just the same.  It took a moment for her to realize that he was returning her frank appraisal with interest.  Mandy's quiet chuckle and the mystery man's playful wink brought another hot flush to Scarlett's face.

"Come on, Juliet!  Let's find a seat near Romeo.  A couch is much better than a balcony after all!"  Mandy's laughter grew as her friend glared at her.

Scarlett tried to focus on Grant or even on the movie; however, her thoughts kept wondering to Romeo.  She shook her head slightly to clear it when she realized she didn't even know his real name.  Though she had looked, she hadn't even seen him since her first day on campus over two and half years earlier.

The small band of humans triumphed over the zombies and the movie ended happily ever after.  Mandy tugged Scarlett to her feet and was already talking.  "One down, how many more to go?  At least they feed us.  I'm dying for a chocolate fix and need some caffeine to make it through.  Grant, you coming with us?"

Grant glanced at Scarlett but after a moment shook his head no.  "I'm gonna hang out with some friends who graduated last year.  Alumni weekend is the only time I get to see those guys."

Scarlett blinked in surprise but nodded.  Grant was sweet and she hadn't paid any attention to him.  She grabbed his arm and fumbled for an apology.  "Look, I'm sorry...I didn't mean...I just..."

"It's okay, Scarlett."  Grant leaned in to brush a kiss on her cheek before he stepped back.  "Some things just aren't meant to be."

Watching him depart with a frown, Mandy's whispered words jarred Scarlett back to the present.

"And some things are meant to be.  Romeo at two o'clock."

Scarlett hadn't meant to react so strongly, but she jerked her head to the right.  Her gaze locked with Romeo's.  She was still staring and appreciating the beauty of his brown eyes when he stopped less than a foot from her.

"I didn't think he was ever going to leave you alone."  His grin again showed perfectly even, white teeth.  "I'm Roman, by the way."

With a laugh, Mandy replied for her star struck friend.  "Of course you are!  Well, I'm Mandy and I'm going for a snack.  This is Scarlett and I'm sure she'll stay and chat.  Have fun!"

When Mandy pinched her side during her farewell hug, Scarlett gasped and tried to organize her thoughts.  Roman spoke before she could accomplish her goal.

"Nice to meet you, Scarlett."  Roman remembered the younger girl from years ago.  She had seemed like such a frightened little lamb then but she had grown up nicely.  The freshmen fifteen had stayed with her which meant she was softly rounded instead of thin, coltish.  Her hair still looked silky smooth and dark against her pale skin.  Up close, he could see her eyes had flecks of gold mixed in with the green and brown.  The girl looked like a tasty little morsel.

Scarlett had again been lost in his deep brown eyes.  Later she would blame Mandy's abandonment for her embarrassing inability to censor her wayward thoughts.  "You have beautiful eyes."

Roman's grin grew and he couldn't resist a playful response.  "The better to see you with, my dear."

It took a moment for Scarlett to comprehend his teasing.  Her laughter was a mixture of amusement and relief.  Grinning herself, she continued the game.  "My, what big, white teeth you have."

Scarlett's eyes dropped to his mouth, but it was his full lips that garnered her attention.  Her eyes widened as those same lips moved directly to hers.  Gasping slightly, her eyes closed in anticipation.  She was surprised to feel his lips against her ear instead of her own mouth.

"The better to eat you with, my dear."

CHAPTER THREE

Even after being Roman's girlfriend for nearly six months, Scarlett still blushed whenever anyone asked how they had met.  The question was typical for the business dinners.  However, she was so flattered he wanted to include her that she glossed over her answer and hoped make-up concealed the dark pink stain on her cheeks.

Roman had immediately taken a position in his father's firm after his graduation.  When they had first started dating he had only referred to his job as an apprentice in the family business.  She had been shocked that the 'family business' was actually a multi-million dollar energy corporation with several offices throughout the U.S.

"The dress fits you beautifully.  Have I mentioned that you look gorgeous tonight?"  Roman brushed his mouth over hers in a barely there kiss before grinning.

"You do always seem to pick out beautiful clothes for me."  Scarlett glanced down at the short plum colored cocktail dress.  It fit like a glove and, like every dress Roman had given her, it made her feel beautiful.  "I'm just glad one of us has some type of fashion sense.  Thank you."

Unable to resist, Scarlett leaned up to return his kiss with one of her own before continuing.  "I always feel like Cinderella""

"Not even for you would I play the part of the fairy godmother."  Roman denied immediately.

Scarlett laughed before she teased.  "You didn't let me finish.  I always feel like Cinderella or Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.  However, I refuse to be a hooker so I guess that just leaves us being ourselves."

"I'm good with that.  Ah, Senator O’Keefe has finally arrived.  I need to have a brief word with him.  Will you be okay on your own?"  Roman mentally reviewed his plan.  His father had been adamant about gaining the Senator's support for an upcoming bill.

It was obvious to Scarlett that Roman's mind was already on business.  She smiled as she gave the answer he wanted.  "Of course.  Go on and do important work."

As she watched him leave, Scarlett's eyes drifted around the renovated theater.  It was a unique setting with rich velvets and dark woods.  The scents of flowers and foods mixed in a drugging fragrance.  She felt lethargic and decadent as she enjoyed the festivities.  It was still astonishing to her that she was allowed to play in the world of the rich and famous.  She wasn't even twenty-one but none of the well-trained wait staff ever questioned her when they offered trays of wine or champagne at each event.

Pretending to nod graciously as she accepted another glass of wine, Scarlett smiled to herself.  She had met movie stars, politicians, and even musicians while accompanying Roman.  Often the company scattered her wits more than the alcohol.  However, she liked to think she was handling it all very well.  If things continued, Roman's glamorous world would become her own.

Scarlett's imagination took flight as she considered having a private jet at her disposal.  She could have a whole closet of expensive clothes and accessories.  Her smile grew as she glanced down at the stack of diamond bracelets adorning her wrist.  A matching diamond choker rested at her neck.  Both were family pieces Roman had borrowed for her to wear.

Thoughts of Roman brought her eyes to the man himself.  He cut a dashing figure in his tuxedo - still muscular, tanned from a recent Caribbean vacation, breathtakingly gorgeous really.  Roman had changed her life when he had introduced himself at the alumni weekend movie night.  He had swept her off her feet and her world was still spinning.

"Scarlett, there's someone I want you to meet."  Roman watched as her dreamy eyes focused on him and she smiled warmly.  He continued as she turned to the man and woman at his side.  "This is Senator O'Keefe and his wife, Alegra.  They have just invited us to a golf tournament at his Georgian home and I told him that I would have to check your availability.  It is scheduled for two weeks from Saturday."

Her eyes widened slightly, but Scarlett hoped the others didn't notice.  Taking a breath, she replied as she knew Roman wanted.  "I've never visited Georgia but I do hear that it's beautiful.  I'm free, Roman.  I hope your schedule allows us to attend."

"Well, it's decided.  We'll see you both then.  Scarlett is a Southern name so it's about time you visit our state."  The balding white-haired Senator began before his wife stepped in.

"Now, don't worry, my dear.  There's a wonderful spa nearby and we'll be spending the day there.  If you want to do any tours, I'm sure we could arrange that too."  Alegra flipped a bright red curl over her shoulder and smiled.  Her smile was not for Scarlett but for Roman.

Roman moved next to Scarlett and placed an arm around her waist while he smiled down at her.  "I don't understand the need to wrap one's self in mud but I do appreciate the results of a good spa day."

Scarlett blushed slightly when the Senator's loud guffaw filled the air.  His boisterous laughter almost completely concealed his wife's breathy giggle.

"Ain't it the truth?  I think we all appreciate that."  The Senator confirmed as he eyed Scarlett appreciatively.

Smiling as she swallowed with difficulty, Scarlett leaned lightly into Roman's side.  "It sounds like we all agree that it will be a good weekend then."

Several minutes later, she sighed with relief when the couple was dragged away by an eager businessman.  Scarlett turned slightly so she could whisper.  "He seems a little creepy, don't you think?"

"That's business.  You can't always pick who has power so you learn to work with everyone.  He's the swing vote and the legislation stands to make us millions.  A weekend in Georgia will be worth that, don't you think?"  Roman turned her words back on her with a sly grin and a squeeze of her waist.

Nodding and chuckling softly, Scarlett was forced to agree.  "Millions for the weekend is much more than Julia Roberts' character got...even adjusting for inflation over many, many decades."

"Exactly.  So you spend the day at the spa, I'll golf, and hopefully everything will go our way."

The familiar tingle danced down Scarlett's spine.  Roman distracted her by pulling her flush against him and delivering a deep kiss despite their audience.

As predicted, the weekend trip to Georgia turned out to be a worthwhile hindrance.  Scarlett had pretended to want to take a tour but that was only so she could study for an upcoming final.  Her junior year was almost over and if she still wanted to graduate a semester early she needed to pass her classes.

Roman's dinners, charity events, and weekends away had cut into her study time; however, Scarlett knew it was worth it.  She was gaining valuable real life experience and making incredibly powerful contacts.  It was a whole new world for her.  She couldn’t resist the temptation to stop and smell the roses - the very expensive, very exotic red roses.

CHAPTER FOUR

"Gran is sick?"  Scarlett repeated the words, trying to understand.  Their family matriarch was older, of course, but she had always been the picture of health and vitality.  The last time she had seen her...it had been almost a year since she had visited her family.  Regret left a bitter taste in her mouth.

Margaret spoke again.  "I'm sorry to have to tell you on the phone, my dear.  Where are you anyway?"

"Barcelona.  We're heading home tomorrow."  Scarlett's mind whirled as she tried to focus on how to see her grandmother as soon as possible.  "We have a charity event this Saturday but I'll skip that.  I should be""

"I don't want you to change your schedule but maybe you could""

Scarlett interrupted her mom’s interruption.  "Mom, I'll be there.  I want to see Gran.  Roman will understand and we've already made a donation to...the charity."  She stumbled slightly when she realized she didn't even know what organization they were supporting.

Pushing that disturbing realization aside, Scarlett frowned and continued.  "I'll let you know my travel plans as soon I finalize them.  Mom, are you okay?  Do you or Dad need anything?"

"No, sweetie.  There's nothing we need other than you.  I can pick you up at the airport."  Margaret gushed.

"Thank you but that won't be necessary.  I'll just get a car.  I'll be there soon Mom.  Call if anything changes."  Scarlett’s formal response was by force of habit.  Her mind was locked in distant memories of her grandmother.  She tried desperately to answer appropriately as her mother continued speaking but more memories bombarded her mind and heart.

Clicking off the phone with shaky hands, Scarlett took several deep breaths.  Her grandmother hadn't just been the occasional obligation when she had been a child.  Gran was part of their family - an integral part.  Memories swelled and grew inside her until Scarlett reached instinctively for the locket Gran had given her.  A strand of pearls rested against her skin instead and she jerked her hand back.

Roman had given her the family pearls when she had graduated from college nearly two years ago.  She had worn the necklace daily except when events required more formal jewelry.  Stepping to the right, Scarlett looked at the pearls before she focused on her own face in the mirror's reflection.  Her shiny brown hair was styled in an elaborate braid.  She had gotten permanent eye liner and lip color as was the current trend.  Routine spa visits meant her skin maintained a youthful glowing tan.  Her teeth were sparkling white and the small gap had long ago been repaired.  Diamonds and other glittering gemstones decorated her perfectly manicured hands and feet.

“The Board has scheduled a last minute meeting tonight so our departure time will be delayed.”  Roman tossed his suit jacket on the bed before he continued.  “We may need to stay a few extra days.  I’ve had Jenny send our regrets for the Alzheimer’s auction.”

Still silent as Roman made his way across the room to take a shower, Scarlett nodded at the name of the charity she had forgotten earlier.  When the door shut behind him, she bit her lip before taking out her tablet.  She couldn’t wait for business because her family needed her.  By the time Roman rejoined her, she was ready.

“Gran is sick.  I’ve made reservations on a flight out first thing tomorrow morning.  I’m sorry but I just can’t wait.  My family needs me, Roman.”  Scarlett declared.  She pulled her shoulders back and stared at her boyfriend.  It felt like she need prepared for battle and that thought scared her as much as her grandmother’s sickness did.

“Now is not a good time for you to leave.  If the merger is approved, we’ll have several big events here.  We are also expected in Dubai next week.  You need"“ Roman frowned slightly as Scarlett spoke over him.

“Dubai?  You haven’t mentioned a trip to Dubai.”  Scarlett started pacing the confines of the large suite.  She was angry, but she couldn’t claim to be surprised.  Roman wasn’t exactly the Prince Charming she had once thought.  Business always came first, even before her.

When Roman’s phone rang and he turned to answer it without a word to her, Scarlett’s mouth fell open.  She snapped it shut with an audible click.  Ignoring his conversation, she moved to continue packing her clothes.  Her thoughts were hazy and confused as anger, fear, and disappointment mixed together.

“Scarlett, we need to finish this discussion.  I am sorry your grandmother is ill and I understand your need to be there.  I’ve arranged to have a car available for you when your plane lands.  Unfortunately, I can’t leave to accompany you at this time.  I’ll have Jenny send my itinerary to you once finalized.  You can join me in Dubai.” Roman placed a kiss on Scarlett's temple before he started making another call.

Sleep eluded her that night, but Scarlett still rose before Roman.  Jotting a quick note to place by his phone, she left for the airport.  Several hours and one layover later, she was driving toward her parents' house.  It had been a simple matter to switch Roman’s reservation from a car and driver to only a car; however, she had gloried in the victory.

“Scarlett!  You made it!”  Margaret had been watching for her daughter’s return and stepped outside before the car had fully stopped.

Rushing toward her mom’s open arms, Scarlett felt tears threaten.  She hadn’t even realized she missed her family, missed her home until that moment.  Her arms tightened desperately before she tried to pull back and smile.

“Of course I made it.  How are you doing, Mom?  How’s Dad?  Gran?”  Scarlett’s voice cracked but she continued quickly.  “Give me the latest details.”

“If you don’t mind, we can talk as we drive to the hospital and I’ll fill you in, sweetie.”  Margaret raised both hands to cup her daughter’s face.  She gave a series of small nods as tears filled her eyes.  ”You look beautiful " I’ve missed you.”

Panting out a harsh breath, Scarlett felt pain lance through her body.  Her mom had aged in the last years and she hadn’t even noticed.  Her grandmother was in the hospital, sick.  On the other hand, she had been jet setting around the world attending parties and business dinners.  Her life hadn’t turned out as she had intended and Scarlett was just realizing that the change hadn’t been a good one.  She couldn’t help but wonder if it was too late to make more changes.  As she stared into her mother’s eyes and spoke, her tone was both wistful and authoritative.

“I’ve missed you too, Mom.  Let’s talk in the car.  I want to know what’s going on and what I can do to help.”

The ride was short and Scarlett felt she had barely scratched the surface of the recent events.  Her mom had recited a litany of tests and issues Gran faced but she didn’t remember any of the medical jargon.  It was her grandmother’s face that dominated her thoughts.  Scarlett nearly raced from the car in her haste.

The throngs of people blocking the hospital entrance immediately frustrated and angered her.  “Please move now!  I need to get inside.”

The crowds responded to her demand until only one man blocked her path.  Before she could speak, his angry voice sliced through the noise and stopped her.

“Did the Big Bad Wolfe think you would be a sympathetic representative?  Did they think we would accept your apologies because you were once one of us?”

Scarlett felt her mom tug her hand forward when she crashed to a halt in front of the stranger.  Her mom started speaking before she could ask any questions.  Unfortunately, her mom’s words made as little sense as the man’s had.

“Hunter, behave yourself!  Scarlett is here to see Edda.  Are you going to tell Edda why her only granddaughter couldn’t get in the hospital to see her?”

Looking reluctantly chastised, the blonde haired man lowered his gaze and stepped to the side.  Scarlett moved with her mother, but she could still feel the man’s gaze boring into her back.

CHAPTER FIVE

Scarlett was thrilled and scared to see her grandmother.  The older woman’s emaciated body appeared skeletal in its frailty.  No longer did her cheeks bloom with color.  Her eyes seemed too large for her thin face.  Staring intently, it took a moment for her to notice the older woman’s smile.

“You’re a sight for sore eyes, little girl.”  Edda moved restlessly against the hospital bed as she spoke.  Her son-in-law moved immediately to help her.   A second later, her granddaughter stepped to her side as well.

Feeling her grandmother’s arms close around her in a weak embrace brought more pain and regret to Scarlett.  The hand her father placed on her back brought similar emotions but comfort as well.  Blinking away tears, she glanced at her father before she kissed Edda’s cheek.

“It’s good to see you...except for the location.  What’s going on, Gran?” Scarlett wanted to hug her father but couldn’t seem to let go of her grandmother’s hands.

“I’m getting old, girl.  That’s just"“ Edda spoke with surprising force; however, both her daughter and her son-in-law interrupted.

“It’s more than that, Mom.” Margaret wiped away tears and stepped to her husband’s side.

“She deserves the truth.” Jonah nodded first to his wife and then to Edda.

Stepping back from all three, Scarlett paced several steps before she turned back and broke the tense silence.  ”I do deserve the truth so someone needs to start talking.  Does this have anything to do with Hunter?”

She had finally placed the man’s face.  As they lived in a small town, she had technically known everyone in her high school.  Hunter had been thin, geeky but sweet when he had graduated a couple years before her.  He had apparently filled out and developed an attitude since then.

It was Jonah who spoke after both older women gave him significant looks.  “It does.”

Scarlett waited for her father to continue.  Losing her patience, she stepped closer to demand an explanation when he finally spoke.

“There was a spill at the Wyoming County industrial plant last summer.  We didn’t learn about it until a few weeks ago when many people got sick.  The river water was contaminated with lead, THMs, and pesticides.”  Jonah paused when his daughter’s face paled.

“It’s been all over the news.  Haven’t you seen anything?” Margaret asked gently.  She understood the view espoused by Hunter and the protesters.  She was angry herself.  However, she also knew that her daughter wasn’t responsible.

Turning away from her family as her mind scrambled for information, Scarlett drew a blank.  She shook her head no without facing them.  After a moment, the scene in front of the hospital finally made sense.  Jerking as if she’d been hit, Scarlett met her father’s eyes and whispered her question.

“Wolfe Industries is involved, isn’t it?”

“Yes.  They bought the plant months before the spill.  They added employees to work on new research that was to revolutionize the energy industry.  News sources claim"“ Jonah wasn’t able to complete his sentence as Scarlett spoke again.

“What are they doing in response?  Roman hasn’t mentioned anything.  It’s possible he doesn’t know the details as it is a large corporation…”  Her words trailed off.  She couldn’t defend him.  Deep inside, she knew Roman was aware of the situation.  She also knew he had intentionally chosen not to tell her.  Her phone was in her hand without her conscious choice.

It wasn’t the first time he had been unable to take her call.  However, Scarlett couldn’t help the suspicious thought that it was the first time he was intentionally avoiding her.  More doubts flooded her mind.  He had stopped arguing after the phone call.  Was it possible the family had decided to send her in for sympathy?  Anger, resentment, and fear fought for dominance inside her.  The internal battle left her feeling sick.

“It doesn’t matter what brought us together.  It only matters that we are all together.”  Edda spoke loudly after her granddaughter had clicked off her phone and simply stared at it.

Margaret stepped in next with other town updates.  With Jonah’s help, the three of them kept the conversation as light as possible.  Their efforts were thwarted when the doctor made his rounds and advised that the most recent tests hadn’t shown much improvement.  It wasn’t just a single chemical poisoning they were attempting to treat but instead a complex mixture of unknown elements.

Scarlett listened to the conversation with half an ear as her internal battle still waged.  The doctor’s parting words required her attention.

“If we could get the full report of the chemicals used by the company then we might be able to make more progress.  Right now, we are just putting out the most urgent fires first.  We need to keep your kidneys functioning.  We will need to address the pulmonary disease and cognitive difficulties eventually though.”

Without a word, Scarlett ran from the room.  She blindly raced through the hospital but came to a crashing halt when she saw the protesters still filled the parking lot.  Even with tears in her eyes, she could read the signs against Wolfe Industries.  She could also see the small child with the oxygen tank in a wheelchair next to a woman screaming for action and punishment.

“How’s Edda doing?”

Pivoting to the right, Scarlett saw Hunter standing close.  His tone had been civil, but his expression was murderous.  She couldn’t blame him.  She was furious with Roman, his whole family, and especially herself.  There was no reason so share those details with a man who clearly despised her though.  Forcing a smile, she answered calmly.

”She’s as feisty as ever and is planning her escape.  Good bye, Hunter.”  When she turned back to the door, Hunter’s arm darted out to grab the handle before she could.  Spinning to confront him again, she found herself pinned between his body and the door.  His stormy grey eyes seemed to reflect her own turbulent emotions.  Anxiety.  Fury.  Guilt.

“I would go out the back if I were you.  With so many sick, so many children dead, the people want blood.  Yours will suffice until the Wolfe finally comes knocking at the door.”

“I’m going to call again.  I’m sure Roman intends to send a representative as I’m just here for my family."  Scarlett wasn’t sure why she was still playing defense but she did know that she needed to get away.  “Now, if you’ll excuse me, please.”

Again she felt his eyes drilling holes in her back as she walked away with her head held high.

Only when she had found privacy did Scarlett let the tears fall.  Once upon a time, she had planned to help people like those in her home town.  She had wanted to fight the destruction of the environment and make a difference.  Somehow, she had gotten distracted and had lost her way.  It wasn’t only that she had stepped off the path.  She had become part of the problem.

More tears flowed until Scarlett couldn’t cry anymore.  She yearned to return to her parents and grandmother so they could fix the problem for her as they had when she had been young.  However, she wasn’t a child anymore.  It was her choice to make, her battle to fight.  Almost immediately, she realized there was no choice to make.  She wanted her family healthy and happy and she wanted to help other families have the same security and well-being.

She was no longer distracted by the luxury and glamour Roman had given her.  Eyes open, disillusioned and determined, Scarlett prepared to fight.  She prepared to fight for others, for her family, and for the girl she’d once been.

CHAPTER SIX

It was Hunter, not her family, who Scarlett turned to for help to fight.  It had taken nearly a week for her to be ready but now she needed him.  Another small town advantage, it wasn’t difficult to get information on him.  She had been surprised at what she had found out.

While he had gained muscle and anger, he apparently hadn’t lost his intelligence.  He had dual bachelor’s degrees in biology and environmental protection and conservation.  His master’s degree was in environmental management.  It would take only one more year before he received his PhD in environmental sustainability.

“You called.”  Hunter stood with his arms crossed over his chest as he stared at her.

Determined, she narrowed her eyes but kept her tone calm.  “I need to know what questions to ask.  I have contacts in the company and have requested information previously.  It shouldn’t be too difficult to find out exactly what happened.”

He didn’t speak for several moments.  Scarlett hoped he bought her bluff since she hadn’t convinced herself yet.  She had finally spoken to Roman but hadn’t revealed the cause of her grandmother’s illness.  The questions he had asked made it clear he knew already.  His deception made it easier to enact her own.  Only after she had the information and the ability to go to the press would she force his hand.

“Why?”

Lost in her own thoughts, she blinked and tried to understand the single word question.  She didn’t try to stop the frown on her face or in her tone.  “Because we need answers to help those who are sick.  The doctor made it clear that he didn’t know all of the chemicals present and he needs to know to help.”

“Why not just call your fiancé?”  Hunter shifted slightly as he nearly growled the question.

“He isn’t my fiancé.”  While Scarlett had felt they were almost at that point, she knew it would never happen.  She no longer wanted it to happen either.  The glamour of Roman’s world had been irrevocably tarnished in her eyes.  “Will you help me or not?”

It had been days since Hunter had agreed and she had to admit that he had proven helpful.  He provided his research and directed her own searches with a tireless energy.  Using her company contacts and the firm tablet she carried, Scarlett was able to get sufficient details on the initial research, the accident, and the cover-up.  The pictures of the blackened earth, brown water, and dead animals haunted her at night.  Nightmares were a small price to pay though.  The doctors had then tested blood samples as per Hunter’s instructions after Gran had consented to the experimental treatment.  It would take time but there was hope.  Scarlett couldn’t help but wonder"

“Scarlett?!  If you don’t focus, we are going to lose again.”  Edda grumbled as she waited for her granddaughter to take her turn.

Laughing slightly, Scarlett checked the make-shift card table on the hospital bed before playing a card.  She hadn’t told her family about her efforts.  If she failed, she didn’t want to disappoint them again.  There was still more to do though before she could judge whether or not she had succeeded.  Roman had no idea she was in on the secret and taking action.  It was almost time to confront him.  However, she wanted to choose the time and place carefully so she would have the advantage.  It was one of the business strategies she had learned from the man himself.

Unfortunately for Scarlett, the battle ground and time were chosen for her.

“Ms. Perrault, are you aware that your fiancé is only an hour away?  Wolfe Industries won’t meet at the local plant.  They are still denying culpability while people die.  Your own grandmother is improving though, isn’t she?  Is that preferential treatment?”

Each day, Scarlett had ignored the protesters and reporters alike, but she couldn’t ignore the new accusations.  Gran’s last test results were better and the doctors had started implementing the treatments for others.  Her grandmother hadn’t received preferential treatment; she had been a guinea pig.

“You ask anyone here about Edda Hassen and you’ll hear nothing but good things.  She’s a wonderful person who has always put others first.  Regardless of what you think about Wolfe or even about me, leave her out of this.”  Scarlett bit out her reply through clenched teeth.

“What about your fiancé?  Will you be re-connecting with him today?”  The reporter continued to hound her.

“Yes, I will.”  Scarlett didn’t correct the reporter, but she did make her decision to confront Roman.  While they had exchanged calls, messages, and texts, he had not informed her of his nearby location.

It took only one call to his personal assistant to get his itinerary.

Briefly, she reviewed the notes and reports from Hunter after she parked her car.  The science was still lost on her.  She had learned which key words would give the impression she knew more than she did.  Focused on her task, Scarlett jumped when someone pounded on her car window.  She was only partially surprised to see Hunter standing there with a grin.  He had worked tirelessly not just on the information she had provided but on his own research as well.  They had met up several times to provide updates and he had visited with her grandmother as well.

“What are you doing here?”  Opening the door, Scarlett decided to go on the offensive so she wouldn’t have to explain her own presence.

He lifted a brow before he replied.  “I saw your smack down with the reporter...then I followed you here.”

“You followed me?  Followed?!”  Scarlett sputtered indignantly.

“No one should have to take on the Big Bad Wolfe alone.”  Hunter peered into Scarlett’s wide eyes.  She flushed with color which he took as his cue to continue.  ”Come on, Red, let’s get this done together.”

Shaking her head at the old nickname, Scarlett then switched to nodding her agreement.  She had come to take Roman down and it would be easier with Hunter backing her up.  It was still her job though.

“Alright.  Let me do the talking.”

When Hunter nodded and closed the door behind her, Scarlett immediately drifted into her fantasy world.  She had played out various scenarios with Roman and reviewed them quickly once more.  It made her feel empowered and prepared.  Touching Gran’s locket which was again around her neck also gave her strength.  Her family wasn’t physically with her but she wasn’t alone either.

Security checked their ID’s but let them pass.  The local office receptionist advised that the Board meeting was private and it would be a few moments before she could alert Mr. Wolfe.  Scarlett smiled graciously and turned, not to take a seat, but to storm through the conference room doors.  It was comforting to feel Hunter at her back.

“Good afternoon Roman, Mr. Wolfe.” Even after years of knowing Roman’s father, Scarlett never used his first name.  Both men rose as hushed whispers filled the room.  She smiled and stepped to the center of the space as she continued in the same syrupy tone.  “I’m so glad you made the trip.  The press has been hounding me for details and I would hate to say the wrong thing.”

She heard Hunter’s aborted laugh just as Roman frowned and cleared his throat.  After a glance at his father, Roman spoke.

“I’m sorry you have been inconvenienced.  You don’t need to respond to them.  We're taking care of everything.”  Roman moved close enough to kiss Scarlett.  At the last moment, she turned her head away so his lips barely grazed her cheek.

Scarlett stepped further away from Roman until she was next to Hunter.  With a hand on his arm, she continued to play her part.  Grim determination, fear, and pride were all concealed beneath a bright smile, wide eyes, and a sweet tone.

“I’m glad you are going to be speaking.  The environmental reports Hunter, oh, I mean, Mr. Avery has presented are very disturbing.  It looks like Wolfe Industries was experimenting with banned chemicals which resulted in a massive spill.  That incident would have been enough to warrant fines but covering it up and using more chemicals to clean it.  Well, that just doesn’t look good.  Even without Mr. Avery’s technical knowledge, I know that.”

Roman and his father frowned ferociously at the mention of Hunter’s name and Scarlett almost laughed.  Her research had shown Hunter was not well liked by big businesses who didn’t want to protect the environment.  It seemed the Big Bad Wolfe was afraid of something after all.  She plunged ahead mercilessly as she again raised a hand to the heart locket necklace which had replaced the jewels Roman had provided.

“Hunter and I are old high school friends so we chatted a bit, of course.  He was at the hospital visiting Gran.  She’s doing much better.  We owe Hunter for that as he has figured out the chemicals poisoning her.  The doctors are calling him a hero.  That’s what I told the press too when they asked how Gran was doing.”

Scarlett watched as Roman glanced at his father.  When his father opened his mouth, Scarlett raised a hand for silence and continued in a much more natural and true tone.

"I do believe we have a lot to talk about boys.  However, if you don't want to talk to me then I'll be forced to contact my new friends in the press."

EPILOGUE

"A hero?  Really?  What about me?"  Gran interrupted the re-telling.

Scarlett laughed with her parents and grandmother as a slight flush of color stained Hunter’s face.  He frowned at them, but she gave his shoulder a gentle squeeze as she wrapped up the story.

“It seems Wolfe Industries will have a press conference here tomorrow with details on the steps they’ve already taken to clean up the spill.  They will make a large, charitable contribution to the town and will fund free clinics to help everyone impacted.  Bottled water and filters will be made available too.  It won’t resolve everything but it’s a step in the right direction.”

Glancing around at her family, Scarlett couldn’t help but feel like she was on the right path again too.  She had told Roman they were finished and she was planning to move back home.  Gran needed help and Scarlett needed her family.

It wasn't too late to make a change.  She could still make a difference in the world by making a difference in herself.  It seemed there was still a lot of work to do on that front but she was determined and hopeful.  Her family had stood by her and she knew they would continue to do so.

It wouldn’t be all work though - there was still time to stop and smell the roses too.  However, Scarlett had found she preferred wildflowers.  Hunter had just given her a belated welcome home bouquet of flowers of all shapes and sizes in pinks, blues, yellows…everything except red roses.  She met his eyes and smiled as she again leaned down to smell the fragrant blossoms.

It was definitely a better happily ever after than she would have had if she had stayed with the Big Bad Wolfe.

Great story especially since it's your first! Only thing I would say is and it's only my thought, that the main character Roman came in too quickly, I know it's hard when it's a short story but a little suspense in the beginning hooks your attention and makes you want to find out what happens next.... Great Idea, keep writing :)
