Chapter 10 derick

My special place, I really need another name for it. How about, um, dragon circle? Okay, so it wasn’t very different. I walked around the cleared clearing. Had Jack had a place like this? Darn I’d been trying not to think of him. I could still see his bubbling face on the floor, all spread out. I remembered his last words: “Don’t stop fighting”. And my vow : I will be there to see all dragons die. And the dreadful feeling that I wouldn’t be able to comply with either one. Feeling slightly sad, I trudge towards the road.

They were at the mall again, Kyli was trying to pull spark away from an amethyst, the color strikingly similar in shade to her eyes. I shook my head. Looking at them, my stomach grumbled. Don’t even think about it, I told myself. Walking up to them, I say “If you want it so much, why don’t you just buy it?” Spark looks at me, noticing me through her treasure lust.

Oh, um, I don’t have the money” she said. “No allowance or anything”

“Do you get money for your birthday?” asked kyli

“What do you mean?” asked spark

“You know, like people give you stuff on your birthday and birthday party? Is this like the hamburger thing?” kyli asked

“Oh, um, ya I don’t do that” she said, turning slightly pink. That sent thoughts of blood and hunger rushing to my head. Stop it, not the time or place, or people I thought.

“You don’t ‘do’ or you haven’t heard about?” kyli asked

“Well, my dad” she made a bitter face at that word “never told me. Tell me about it. Do you get shiny stuff?” she said brightening slightly.

“Well, it’s a celebration, can be however you want, and people give you gifts” I said, stepping forward.

“Ya” kyli said glancing at me “we can have it in a week. Usually you have one at home and have a birthday list so your family knows what to get you on your actual birthday, and a party with your friends later. I have a feeling” she said, casting a pitying look at spark “that having one at home is not going to happen. So, you can give us your birthday list”

“Awesome” Spark said, like it was the first time someone had offered given her something.  “Okay, I’ll tell you what I most want” pausing and pressing her lips she started rattling off a list of stuff “Anything shiny, pulsing, sparkly, or crystaly, um, Some cool pencils, a bike, a skateboard, and uh, never mind. Ill tell you more tomorrow, but I have to get home”

“What Spark, tell us and we’ll try and get it” she said looking pointedly at me.

“Oh, ya tell us” I said hurriedly

“Well, is there any way we could, I don’t know, fly” she asked, the last word trailing off

“Oh, ya, that is kind of hard, any ideas?” Kyli said, glancing at me.

“We could hang glide” I said hesitantly

“What's that?” spark asked, looking like she was really sick of asking what everything was.

“It’s when you fly on these glyders, like wings.” kyli told her. Then “Great idea Derick.”

“Okay, I really have to go” said spark as she hurried out the door.

“Hmm” said kyli “how are we going to get hang gliders?”

“I can get them” I said

“Okay, I’ll work on her other stuff” she said. Suddenly looking at me she said “You know she likes you right? Why don’t you ask her out?”

I looked at her, did I really like her? “I don’t, you know, ‘like’ her. We’re just friends”

“Oh, come on. You never talk to anyone, and now you lend her your skateboard and help plan her party.” she said

“I’m talking to you” I pointed out

“Fine, deny it.” Kyli said. Ugh, this couldn’t be happening. I was a, a vampire! I drank people's blood. That was mostly why I never talked to people. My kind were viewed as monsters. No one knew, not even my foster parents! This is why I spend so much time alone.
