I don’t know why I did it. I just blurted it out. The girls focused on me, a little surprised. So did everyone else. Guess that happens when the least talkative guy lends a skateboard to the new girl. I guess it would make it even more strange if they knew what I was. “Are you sure you want to lend me your skateboard to me?”
“Yeah” I said. Why did she talk like that?
I handed her my helmet. “You good at skateboarding?”
She gave me a crooked grin.
“Yes I am very good”. For the first time she looked me in the eye. Her eyes were violet. My stomach did a flip. She was definitely cute. She hopped on, going in confidently, flipping the board, and all sorts of cool tricks. It looked almost like she was flying. She was amazing. Her balance was perfect. She was almost as good as me. Almost. After a little, she hopped up onto where I was standing. “Try to beat that” she challenged.
“It would be my pleasure.” I said And I did, just barely managing not to fall as I did a particularly hard trick, but successfully topping hers. We practiced more. She was getting even more daring. Alright, maybe she was as good as me.
“I have to go” I told her
“Okay,” she said.

I started walking. It really was beautiful here, tall trees lining the road, trying, and failing, to save the grass from dying of a heat stroke. The blue sky just the right shade, it was like the town was smiling. This would be a good summer, I just knew. The sidewalk vanished, replace with a path covered in pine needles, small twigs, and pinecones. Small trees sprung up around me, their needles rustling gently in the wind. Birds sang, and a nearby stream burbled happily. Slowly, the path rose, coming to rest on a hill, and at it’s peak, my grounded club house.
It wasn’t really a club house, but I didn't know what else to call it. It was a large shed, with two floors, out in the wilderness. It wasn’t really that far out, but it was fun to think of it that way. It would be awesome. I was planning to give it to the colonel, sort of like a secret base, granted a small one. It was kindof a sorry present. I’d been working on it ever since I'd let the dragon go. I stopped. Something was tugging at my mind. A memory just out of reach. After staring blankly at my project for a couple of seconds, I gave up. It was almost done I just needed to finish the roof. Grabbing a hammer, I started to climb up the aluminum ladder the roof. I got to work, nailing the boards i had cut from trees in to make the clearing. Maybe the work would help clear my mind. I should be done in a couple of weeks, or a month.

That night, I dreamed of a set of violet eyes, staring at me from the dark. For some reason, they made me sad.
