I could stand here today

look into your eyes

and for the millionth time

tell you I love you

and promise to keep loving you

for rich or for poor

in sickness and in health

for better or for worse

until death do us part

but you already know that I love you

and I hope you don’t expect that to change

so instead I stand before you

with a new promise

I promise to be there

I promise to be there

with pizza and Netflix

on days your boss

makes you just a little homicidal

I promise to be there

a comforting touch

between your shoulder blades

as the final remnants

of the nightmare

dissipate

I promise to be there

when you need a hiking buddy

even in the hottest weather

despite my hatred for all things exercise

I promise to be there

through the yelling

and the silent treatments

when running is the easiest option

I could promise to love you

but an action

like a picture

is worth a thousand words

So I promise to be there

as a best friend

a supporter

a lover

and a wife

for rich or for poor

in sickness and in health

for better or for worse

until death do us part
