BEHIND ANCIENT EYES

Survivor-For all the children who hurt, who are lost, who go hungry who are abused.. -There is a special circle of hell reserved for those who abuse children

To my surprise I met a little girl today
Peering out from behind ancient eyes
She said my stepfather assaulted me
And everyone said I was telling lies

She pointed to her stomach and said
It hurts me here
With a pain that never goes away
Mom told me to say I lied in court
I was fourteen when I left home that day

Just another kid on the crowded streets
Who'll be there to shed a tear for her?
How can we pass her by like a rabid dog?
When we're the ones who helped to
Put her there

C'mon we've got to save the children
 For without them where will we be?
You can see the pain on their faces
Written in the tracks of their tears


She said what can you do?
 It doesn't matter much
I've handled it this far on my own
When no one believes you
You give it up
And trust is just a word I disown

So now whenever I see a grown up face
I wonder if I'll meet a little girl or boy
Peering out from behind ancient eyes
With a pain that never goes away

C'mon we've got to save the children
For adults they'll someday be
No one should hurt from an unwanted touch
Where is the safety we promised them?
We promised them
