Butterflies,
the sweats, stuttering, and fidgeting. Yup, she was nervous. But why should she
be? She’s been to a new school before. Her foster parents move her around the
world every year. When she was six she spent eight months in a European
catholic school, only to be told she was the devils child and sent away. But
why? “Left handed devil she is!” the prickled nun told her mother.
“Oh that’s a bloody lie! We’ll
take our daughter elsewhere if that pleases you and your bloody school!” and
they left to travel to Africa and lived in the wild.
Now,
being six-teen, with parents growing weary of the adventures of the world, they
are finally settling down in a small town in Virginia. Clifton, a place with a
population of two hundred and eighty two people, was a cold town that would
soon become the place of her heart.
“School
starts at eight o’clock, Tori, so finish eating your breakfast and hurry your
little butt out to the car. First day, I’m driving,” her mother smiled at her.
Tori gave her a look of irritation and dumped her eggs in the waste basket,
feeling her mother’s frown as she made her way to the door.
She
sat in the passenger’s seat and waited for her mother to lock the front door
and make her way to the car, starting it up. The whole ride to Clifton High
School took less than ten minutes, but to Tori it felt like hours due to her
mother’s non-stop talking about how great it’ll be to settle down and live, and
most of all, make friends. After fifteen years of being around the world, her
mother wanted her to start making friends? Could that even be possible?
They
pulled up into the drop off lane, her mother shutting the car off. Feeling
awkward, Tori turned to look at her mother’s pretty face. She longed to be
their natural daughter. Both her parents were so pretty, unlike her. She was cursed with frizzy black hair that
never grew past her shoulders, eyes so big that they seemed to glow an alien
green in the dark, and a nose that may seem too button-like to some people.
Obviously her mother thought she was the prettiest teenage girl, but Tori knew
she was below average.
Her
mother though, was the sun to Tori’s moon. She had long golden blonde hair that
glistened in the sunlight, and blue eyes that sparkled when she smiled, as was
happening as she looked at her mother. “Mamma, why did you and papa adopt me?”
she asked for probably the millionth time in her life, but the answer always
gave her a feeling of hope, like she could
become a pretty teenage girl.
“Well, as you know, your real mother
was a teenager who got pregnant and became a surrogate for us, and
unfortunately died giving birth to you. You were born in a puddle of blood, and
so very tiny. The doctor told us you wouldn't live long, but you blossomed, and
became our beautiful baby. You were so attached to me and your father and so
pretty. I knew deep in my heart that you were meant to become my baby, and look
at you now,” she sniffled, “Our grown baby girl.”
“Thanks
mom,” she replied awkwardly. Without another word, she opened the car door and
took off into the front doors of the school. She looked up to take in her
surroundings and noticed the sign to the bathrooms. Quickly, she ducked into
the girls’ restroom and plopped her bulky bag on the floor and peered into the
mirror. Perfect, she thought. No one will ever notice me. Not with these
black skinny jeans, or my black shirt with the word GEEK written on it. I’m gonna be as normal as it
gets. If I can. She groaned aloud, and instantly regretted it. Behind her,
a toilet flushed.
She
turned around and glanced at the stall door as it opened, releasing a goddess.
The girl was dressed in a skin tight black dress with sleeves that were covered
in dark purple skulls. Her hair was raven black with half of it dyed dark
purple, matching her dress perfectly. She looked into her eyes that were the
kind of dark blue that appeared to be violet. The girl smiled at her, causing
Tori to look at her lips that were covered with black lipstick, a perfect
contrast to her pearl white teeth.
“Hi,
I’m Kitty.” The girl said as she reached her hand out. Tori took it in hers and
shook it, feeling an electric shock as she did so. Surprising herself, she
giggled. “Kitty? Is that actually your real name? I mean, it’s cute,” she
giggled again. Kitty smiled at her and replied, “Yea, that’s my real name. My
parents were total potheads when they had me. Kitty seemed cute to them, at the
time anyway,” and she giggled herself. The sound was angelic to Tori’s ears.
“Well nice to meet you, Kitty.
I’m Tori. My parents and I just recently moved here.”
“I can tell. Look at the way
you’re dressed. You certainly don’t belong.” Tori began to feel different,
weird. Undetected to Tori, a tear slipped down her cheek. Kitty frowned and
rushed over to her, using her thumb to wipe away the tear. “I didn't mean it
like that, girl. I just. . . I just meant that all the girls here dress like
they belong in a beauty pageant, all pink and ‘classy’ as they say.”
Tori
smiled and hiccuped a little sob. “Thanks. I feel horrible as it is. I’ve
never actually been to high school. My mom home schooled me since seventh
grade.” She sniffled and gathered herself together. Kitty cupped Tori’s cheek
in her palm and caressed her face with her thumb. “Don’t worry girl, I’ll be
your friend. I’ll keep you safe.” The girls stood there, lost in each other’s
eyes when the bell rang to start school.
“Alright girl, what grade you in?
I’ll walk you to homeroom. Each grade only has one, which proves the smallness
of this pathetic town,” she laughed. Tori responded with a confused look,
saying, “Um, tenth.” Kitty gave her a bright smile, flashing her teeth, and
announced, “Me too!” The girls walked down the hallway together, heading into a
future neither of them would have ever imagined.
By lunch time, Tori was already
shunned by the whole school. After getting her lunch, she stood looking for her
only friend, Kitty. Fortunately, there were only two lunch periods;
unfortunately, she didn't think Kitty had the same one.
“Tori! Over here Tori!” She heard
her voice and spotted Kitty, waving her arms in the air like a fool. Kitty
seemed to act like herself at all times, and didn't seem to give a s**t what
anyone thought.
“Oh Jesus I was worried I wouldn't have lunch with you. Already it seems everyone hates me.” Tori said as she
settled herself next to Kitty and looked at the other two girls who were
sitting in front of them. “Oh hello, I’m Tori. And you two are?” She asked
them.
The
first girl, a pretty blonde, smiled and said, “I’m Angie, but everyone calls me
Egg.” Tori gave her a questioning look and she went on, “When I moved here when
I was six, my mom packed me a lunch and put a plain egg in my bag and I
screamed and threw it at a teacher, so they call me Egg girl,” she smiled
nervously. Tori nodded and looked at the other girl. “And you?”
“I’m
Lee,” she said with a very masculine voice. “No, I’m not a girl,” he said with
a shy smile. “I’m just gay. Now, before you ask, yes I like dick in the butt.”
Tori broke out laughing, and instantly quieted herself.
“I
support you,” she said with a smile. “I have nothing against that, although my
parents would throw a s**t-fit if they knew I had a gay friend.”
“Well
you better not tell them about Kitty then. She loves dat pusseh,” Egg said as
she giggled. Kitty threw her an evil look and smiled at Tori. “Yes, I’m a
lesbian. And no, I do not like every woman I see, as most of the girls in this
school think I do. Plus, I’m emo, so a b***h wants to say s**t, a b***h will be
cut.” She said as she looked at Egg with evil in her eyes, which only made Egg
giggle even more. Kitty just rolled her eyes.
“So,
Kitty,” Tori began slowly, “Do you maybe want to come over to my house after
school? I’d love for you to meet my parents.” She looked at the other two. “You
guys can come too if you want.” Kitty shrugged and nodded her head.
“No,
we gotta go with our parents to the store after school. Maybe some other time.”
Lee responded. Tori just shrugged, saying, “Alright. Meet me by the main
entrance after school,” and went back to eating her saggy-looking lunch. As she
ate, she noticed Kitty looking at her with a smile on her face, and she began
to rub Tori’s back.
By the end of the day, Tori was
feeling exposed, judged. Through her last two classes, she heard non-stop
whispering about her hanging out with the gays. Who cares that they prefer to
be with someone that’s the same sex as them? Obviously the whole school did. It didn't bother Tori though. After all, her whole life she had been different.
She
shoved her books into her locker and walked out of the school, spotting Kitty
sitting on the steps waiting. She walked over slowly, and couldn't help but
think about the weird tug her heart gave when she first looked at Kitty’s
pretty face.
“Hey!” Kitty
popped up and smiled brightly at Tori. “I've been waiting for you! So, do you
walk or do your parents pick you up?” she said as her and Tori walked together
on the concrete path leading away from the school. “Today my mom is picking me
up, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be walking the rest of the year. I don’t live too
far away. Here,” she pointed to the curb. “We can sit here and wait for her.”
They sat for
less than a minute before Tori heard her name being called. She stood, taking
Kitty’s hand in hers and staggering with the electrical shock that ran through
her body. “Are you okay Tori?” Kitty asked with a worried look. “Yes, I’m fine.
Come on, I hear my mom call me. There, I see her.” The girls made their way to
the white SUV her mother drove.
“Hello
darling. Who’s your friend?” She asked with a smile on her pretty lips. “Mamma,
this is Kitty, Kitty, this is my mom.” The two shook hands and Tori’s mother
said, “Just call me Alice, unless you want to call me mom,” she smiled.
“Hello, Alice.” Kitty replied.
“Well girls, get in the car.
Kitty, do your parents mind if you come over for a while? I could call them if
you’d like.”
“No thanks, I’ll call them when
we get to your house. They’ll be fine with it.”
Alice smiled in the rear view
mirror. “Alright. Dad needs me to pick him up. Apparently his car is a piece. .
.” Alice droned on and on while the girls only half listened. It was by the
time they were almost home that Tori realized she was still holding Kitty’s
hand.
The newly found friendship
between the girls blossomed with such force that they were unable to be
separated for more than a day. They spent the night at Tori’s house almost
every day, and spent time together all throughout each day. By the time junior
year hit, the girls were like sisters. Even Alice treated Kitty like her
daughter. The only thing the girls didn't share was a relationship with Kitty’s
parents. She always insisted that she would introduce Tori to them, but she
never did, and she wouldn't tell Tori why.
Still,
everyone in their school talked about them. They thought that since Kitty was a
lesbian that meant that Tori couldn't be her friend, she had to be her
girlfriend. But the girls don’t care about what everyone else thinks. Their
friendship will break through any bullshit people put them through.
This
morning, the first day of their junior year, Kitty was slipping a pretty black
blouse on, and a fluffy black tutu over neon green tights. Today Tori and she
have been friends for a whole year. I
will tell her how I feel today. I will let her know I love her. She brings out
the good in me. Before her… before her I was just a bad person. Kitty
thought.
