Teenage Revolt

Teenage Revolt

A Poem by

Oh boy, don't say it again
Do not repeat to me about
How teenagers are ignorant and
Cause so much unneeded chaos
Don't you get it?
We are humans, you and I
Breathing the same air,
Containing the same number of chromosomes
For God's sake,
Open your eyes
We all make mistakes, and yes
Some of us do venture to drugs
And alcohol
And tragedy
People who have already stopped growing
Who work for a living,
They do too
And don't you dare repeat to me
That ignorant phrase
"You need to grow up,"
or,
"Stop being so emotional, child."
There is an increasing rate of
Girls and boys who don't have the self-esteem
Or confidence to be themselves
To reveal their emotions without judgement
But then again,
There are adults with the same issues
That contradicting comment
About how selfish, how stupid
We are as a whole?
The world is difficult enough
The doubts of safety
Increases of suicide, of eating disorders
Of the divorce rates!
Christ, is there any trust to be slivered from
The gross reality of our world today?
Everything we say,
Wrong.
Everything we try so hard to accomplish,
Not enough.
The person we fall in love with completely?
A waste of time that ticks away in the bodies
Of the societal lectures
"Have a great body, or be a disgrace."
"Earn the most money, or forget about being beautiful!"
"20 tips on weight loss,"
Or,
"How to be the perfect version of yourself, in 5 steps!"
How about, father,
And mother,
And the government as a whole
We step back and view what is taught
Maybe rub your chin, and doubt what is preached
Instead of faith, love
We have merciless crime and unemployment,
Parents who read books and news articles
On how to expect too much
Or the importance of making the children of tomorrow
Doubt their value? To feel
Emotionless
Caged
Driven to the point of tears and blood
To earn their keep
Fit in the jeans you expect them to?
How about, we realize
Our mistakes and maybe, for once,
We could follow OUR dreams,
Not fear being shunned from our families
For coming out, or not having a
Fat, large paycheck
And to the media,
I yell a loud, obnoxious
"F**K YOU!"
To all of the lives devoted to starving
In hopes of acceptance from you
To the skinny, airbrushed models you portray
As perfect, natural
To shaming those who are happy
Truly happy, because
You are too shallow to realize the world isn't in fact
Revolving around beauty, and 200 calorie meals
Screw off, all of the corporations
For continuing to poison our bodies
With unneeded chemicals
And to the government
For feeding us lies and keeping us dependent
On self-conceited a******s
Who are only in it for the money
And for all of you reading this,
Never listen to those who aren't worthy
Of your time;
Change for no one, and follow your beliefs
Don't EVER let anyone convince you otherwise
You are the one who decides your path,
Not them. Love yourself beyond the boundaries
People have set upon you
Ignore the rules of society, the cage of guilt and envy
Of eating or loving yourself. You
Are your own boat
And you only need yourself to row you along.
Screw everyone who thinks differently.

You are a very smart person. I felt the same way when I was a teenager. The thing that doesn't make sense to me is that everyone was a teenager at some point so why perpetuate a judgement on an age group when you yourself hated that at that age? And as you get older, you have new stereotypes to destroy so how about we just wise up and abolish them all? I very much enjoyed reading this. Never give up what makes you passionate and angsty. Keep questioning, keep writing, keep revolting. xo
