Legalize the Kind

Legalize the Kind

"Why is marijuana not legal? Why is marijuana not legal? It's a natural plant that grows in the dirt. Do you know what's not natural. 80 year old dudes with hard ons that's not natural. But we have pills for that. We're paying thousands of dollars to keep the old guys erect. But people are getting arrested for smoking something that grows in the dirt."(Lazyboy)

Many people ask this question. The pro-marijuana people have great reasons, while the anti-marijuana people make little sense. Marijuana should be legalized.

A lot of religious groups are against it for no reason. The Christain Science monitor believe we would have to pay more for cops and this is what they had to say. "The costs of legalizing marijuana would outweigh any possible tax that could be levied." However, when California legalized medical marijuana, it did not increase usage. Therefore, we would pay less for police that arrest 750,000 people per year for carrying small amounts of marijuana. They also believe that more youth will start smoking. "The Dutch have had to greatly ratchet back on the number of legal marijuana outlets because of increased pot usage by youth." However, in California, they spend $216,000 per year on every detainee and only $8,000 for each kid in Oakland Public Schools. Maybe, if we woudl legalize marijuana, these two numbers will change around. If they legalize it, we will have more money to educate kids on drugs, so less will use it. The anti'marijuana people are jumbled up. They cannot come up with a reason to keep it illegal

However, the pro-marijuana people have great reasons to legalize it. First of all, it will boost the economy with small businesses. "he brimmed with pride at his inventory and sounded like any small business man." This man, Mr. Kim, competes with three other stores on his block. This creates competition and more money for the economy. Also, we can uses more tax money for education. According to a study, if legalized, marijuana will produce enough money to send every kid to a good preschool to help with education. Also, there will be enough left over for a highly improved drug-free program. Finally, we are waisting our police force. For those cops that are arresting the 750,000 people, we could be using them to find murderers, rapists, and runaways. "The only group that benifits from continuing to keep marijuana illegal are the violent gangs and cartels that control its distrubution."

Marijuana should be legalized. The religious groups cannot come up with a good reason. The president himself won't say anything nationwide because he knows he is outnumbered. The benifits outweigh the negatives by far. It should not be why. The question is when will marijuana be legalized?

You don't make mention of the most important fact of the side effects of cannabis consumption. Although there is some medical support for so called "medicinal marijuana", the general agreement is that even one puff can cause irreversable brain damage, especially in young people. More research is needed before people can say it is safe to use.
You also do not make mention of the behavioural effect on many people. While some will say it is relaxing, others react by becoming aggressive and/or violent. When mixed with alcohol and other drugs, cannabis is a dangerous drug itself.
I have seen a number of young people adversely affected by their marijuana use, including one particular young man, not yet 20 who was pretty much brain dead, solely due to his addiction to marijuana.
