She is strong . When we first started abusing her body she held her ground and said nothing .We were encouraged and taking this as a sign of acceptance we abused her more, hungry for her most private treasures. When she refused, furious, we doused her with chemicals, injected her with some too , we cut off her wealth of hair. Still she refused to break. We did not stop, we ravaged her again and again and again, then she started trembling as we slowly opened all her clothes and reached inside, trembling not with pleasure or fear or hatred, no, because by the time we almost stripped her naked she was sick, her hair and skin had started falling off but we were so sickly and pervertedly attracted to her private parts that we did not care or see what was happening to her, we fought with each other for a chance to enjoy ourselves with her, and when we finally stopped for a while gaining our breath preparing to fight again like dogs over a b***h, we noticed she had changed, she was still beautiful but it had a sadness in it, as if she has given up her fights, she was weaker, thinner, unable to control her natural processes, afraid that she might die we put our ears to her chest, and then through the silence we heard the labored but steady lub-dub lub-dub beat of her heart .....
SHE STILL LIVES no matter how many holes we have dug in her , no matter how much toxic waste we have created , no matter how much wars we have fought , forests we have burned down to the ground , fields we have covered up with concrete jungle , SHE still lives ... but she is dying .. give her a chance goddamn it..else we die with her.
A great metaphor for the rape of the earth, yet in many parts of the world the abuse of women continues unabated too.
Your story told succinctly is an indictment of our time.
I like the way you expressed the sadness of the abuse of the planet. I will never understand why man would want to destroy his home, his source of food and water? Thank you for sharing the story. The sad part the story is true. Thank you for the excellent poem.
