Blind Faith

Blind Faith

A Story by

“I don’t trust you.”

“How can you not trust me, I’m your girlfriend. I won’t do anything wrong.”

“That’s a lie.”

“Maybe you should learn to trust me.” Brayden’s hand clung to Hunter’s as the couple walked through the woods. There were strange noises all around them: twigs breaking, birds chirping, and Hunter’s constant nagging. It had just been one of those days and Hunter wasn’t handling it well. He didn’t like walking around a forest blind folded, it wasn’t something he enjoyed doing on his free time. Not only that but Hunter was a control freak. He liked being able to make decisions for himself, but the couple had been spending more and more time together as their relationship matured. Brayden was perfectly fine with Brett making the decisions. However this time it was her turn and their was nothing Brett could do to change that, except complain.

“How much farther do we have to go?”

“Not very, just calm down. I‘ll be careful.”

“Yeah, we will see how careful you are.” There was a pause as a thought crossed Hunter’s mind. “You are going lead me to the edge of cliff aren’t you? Once I’m there you are just going to shove me off. I knew it. That’s why I have the blindfold on, so I won‘t see it coming. I‘ve discovered your plan.” His voice was sarcastic while the other half was slightly terrified. It was the whole being alone in a forest and not seeing it forest that was putting him on edge.

“Oh yeah you know me. I’m a serial killer, you caught me.” Her humor was

incredibly dry as she led him along. His snide comments were beginning to get to her and she was ready to give up. But she kept moving she wanted him to see this. She also wanted him to trust her but his worrying complaints were not making her feel any better. If he would just trust her then it would all be worth it in the end. She wasn’t a terrible person, she just needed him to follow her. And if anything did happen, she wouldn’t be able to live with herself. “Now, deck your head.”

Smack

, Swoosh, CRACK. “OW!” Hunter’s head had knocked the bottom of a low tree branch and had started falling backwards dropping Melody’s hand. He landed on his back across the forest ground. The wind had been knocked out of him as he took a deep breath. There was a red mark imprinted on his head and it looked like it was already starting to swell and bruise.

“Hunter, are you okay?” He heard the twigs crack under her feet as he approached him.

“God Brayden what was that?” Hunter snapped.

“I told you to duck.” She was getting defensive now as she helped him sit up

“You never said how far. That hurt. Geeze! What are you trying to do? Kill me? Seriously Brayden, I‘m done with this” Hunter’s hands went behind him to untie the bandana from his eyes but Brayden’s hands stopped him.

“What are doing?”

“I’m getting this blindfold off, I’m tried of this. If you want to show me

something then you are just going to have to let me see for myself.” Brayden bit her lip as she paused for a second. She inhaled and dropped her hands from his. If he didn’t want to do it anymore, then she wasn’t going to make him. But she had to ask, no matter how much it hurt her.

“I’m tired of this, Hunter. Do you trust me? That is all I need to know because if you don‘t then I‘m not going to try.” Brayden was obviously hurt and she wasn’t going to take much more of this. He either trusted her or he didn’t. That was all she needed to know. “Make up your mind. I can’t be the only one trusting in this relationship. So do you trust me or not, Hunter?”

Hunter had caught her tone change. She was completely serious. And he knew it was terrifying not being able to see what was going around him but he knew that if he took the bandana off then she wouldn‘t be able to look at him the same way. Hunter wanted to see but he wanted Brayden as well. This wasn’t easy for either of them and he decided he was going to give it one more shot. He sighed and dropped his hands from the bandana around his eyes.

“How much farther do we have to go?”

“You just need to get under the tree branch and you’ll be less than 10 feet away.” Brayden’s voice changed once again as she helped him get off the ground.

Hunter stood up slowly and instantly found Brayden’s hand again.

“Okay, now duck and I‘m serious this time.”

That time Hunter didn’t need to ask how far. He squatted, clearing his head from the second tree branch and holding on to Brayden tightly. She was the only one that could see between the two of them and instead of complaining, he could trust her. It was easier for them both as they walked together, side by side, to the place Brayden wanted to show him so badly.

“It would have been a lot easier if you just let me walk by myself.” Hunter was being completely serious as the two walked the final steps.

“That‘s not the point Hunter, and you know it.” Brayden was slowly giving up. “I just wanted to show you something.”

Hunter stopped, giving in. “Fine but was it really worth me bashing my head against a tree branch?”

Brayden’s laughter hit Hunter’s ear as a smile spread across his face. “It was quite entertaining if that counts for anything.”

“No,” He smirked. “Are we there yet?”

“Close your eyes.“ She spoke softly as they approached the place Brayden wanted to bring him. She made sure Hunter sat down before she removed the blindfold and saw this eyes were closed. “Okay, open them.”
