Riddle Me This

A Chapter by Cassidy Snyder

After what seemed like forever, she reached the bottom. Disappointingly, it was a dead end. There was only a small table and four walls. With a deep breath, she decided to look around. Examining the walls she found nothing. Before going back to her room to live out the rest of her days in tragic disappointment, she looked at the small table in the corner. There was a letter! It read:

Dear Eleanora,

Congratulations! We didn’t expect you to make it this far.We know you’re probably eight up with this, but just hear us out. You’re only in the middle of your journey, but we won’t judge you if you were two deside to give up. But if you do decide to continue, be careful. Just wanted to give you a heads up.

Chao,

L. R.

Eleanora decided to focus on the words in bold. “Eight, up, middle,” she mumbled under her breath. Eyes widening she realized it meant eight stones up the middle of the wall. “But which one?” Looking around she decided to just go with the one in front of her. Pressing the eighth brick up in the middle of the wall, nothing happened. She then did this with the rest of the walls. Finally finding the right one, she continued with the puzzling letter. “Two, side?” she said as she looked at the wall before her. “So I guess I just pick a brick that’s two over…” She said nervously. Crossing her fingers she chose the brick to the left. She then heard a swooshing sound. Ducking quickly she barely missed the large blade that had swept across the room at neck level. “That’s what heads up meant,” she said rolling her eyes. Pushing the brick to the right she ducked. The blade swung again.

“I don’t know what you want me to do!” she yelled. Her voice echoed through the tower. She determinedly walked to the wall and laid both of her hands on either side of the eight brick. Pressing with all her might, the wall started to move. Quickly stepping back she laughed. There was a wooden door, with a handle. “Freedom, here I come!” she declared. She swung the door open and promptly screamed.
