I in no way intend to disrespect those with a legitimate depression disorder; however, in the teenage scene there seems to be a whole new form of ridiculousness forming. You have seen them, they are either wicked tight pants long hair whiny kids, or clothed in completely black getup from head to toe with mascara tears and chaotic hair and piercings all over the place. They cut themselves, but not because they want to die, because they get addicted to the release of endorphins which are released into the brain.
It’s not the fact that they are depressed which ticks me off, it’s the fact they try too hard to broadcast it. I mean to me, if you were depressed, that makes you dwell within yourself, not distinctly mar your appearance and paint tears across your face. And what’s up with the shaggy dog hairstyles which extremely limit your eye sight radius? Can you even pass a driving license like that? If you genuinely feel depressed, bathing in darkness and hanging out with the rest of the reject cutters doesn’t seem like the road to recovery to me.
Whenever I have felt depressed, I hid it from everyone. Usually the most depressed of all people appear completely normal until they get within the walls of their own sanctum. I don’t understand why flashing your so called emotion to the world is going to resolve anything. When people see a young woman crying in a coffee shop, they may feel inclined to ask what’s wrong, and maybe go out of their way to make the person feel better. But when people see a small gang of teenagers dressed to the hilt in midnight shaded clothes and chains galore, with hair going in so many directions it boggles the mind to imagine what sort of hairspray was used, people tend to generally avoid all contact.
To me, these people are not depressed. They are attention seekers. They thrive on people’s reactions to their appearances. Which all in all deems this article completely useless, because they will either read these words with a smirk or simply strike out at me with every colorful word they can imagine. Depression is not a joke. It is not something to mimic because it makes you look cool. I got news for all of those in the emo lifestyle category, you look like idiots, and you really need to grow up because when you get into the work force they won’t deal with all of your crap.
Anyways, this is the fifth entry, hope you enjoyed it =)
