Hawaiian Hula yesterday and today

"Hawaiian Hula"

We have a Kumu or hula teacher

She knows how to move the feet

Move the body with a gentle sway

But only watch the hands so sweet

Dancer's have two hula styles

"Hula Kahiko" is about the ancient days

Praising chiefs with mournful chants

Sacred aina and fighting warrior ways

"Hula Auana" is the modern style

Kane and wahine dance to drums

Swaying under the romantic nights

to music as the ukuele strums

Each movement has a meaning

Represents flowers, animals, in lore

Waving palm, smile, dance with feelings

like a free bird let your spirit soar

Wahine's long hair has flowers

wears muu muu or pau skirt

Kane looks so handsome

with hat and aloha shirt

 Dancing under starry nights

Or gathering flowers in the sun

Beautiful people enjoy the hula

Please come and share the fun

My church teaches Christian hula

Aloha shared in church or gym

Beautiful praise words come alive

While dancing with respect to Him
