Virology 101

Virology 101

A Poem by WordKnurd

Sometimes evolution can work backwards,

paring superviruses down from mighty beings

with thousands of lines of DNA

and their own food source, to a shell,

who must rely on its host to survive.

Sometimes the little things hurt most.

Like having my finger pricked before donating blood,

or hitting my pinky toe on the foot of the couch,

or realizing this was never a real relationship.

Did you know the rabies virus

can’t survive long in aquatic conditions

so instills in its victim a terrible fear of water?

Her mind descends into furious delirium

her heart and lungs surrender,

and all the while she is also dying of thirst.

Decency frightens me now.

So clearly, you were never a fan of it either.

There is a logic jump here. 'you' being virus, that made 'ne' the thing it lives off of afraid of decency. After effects of an unhealthy relationship often leave a person wary of kindness.

Extremely original. Well said. Subtle and in your face all at once.

I suggest separating the last two lines into their own stanza, making it clear that they are actually the point. Also consider making the last line stronger.

This is a very curious take on the meaning of things which is good. I'm not sure I can follow your reverse logic but take it from from me that is a good thing too!
Well done.
