Origins of Man (According to Cat)A Story by WolfwindBefore man was a thought upon the Earth. Before the mountains were tall And the valleys low. In a time when nothing but water’s waves rippled into
infinity. There was a conversation.
Upon a log adrift Three creatures clung with sharpened claws, hanging on for
dear life. For they hated the water fiercely.
They had no idea how they had come to be Or what it was they were or what they clung to For no such things had ever existed.
Yet, they had thoughts and voices. Their voice’s, at first, were simple growls and whines. Then one, the eldest of the three raised a head Speaking clearly for the first time in all existence.
“My name is Will!” it cried, almost losing its balance on
the log. A long protrusion from it’s rear end getting dampened by waves, which
it liked not at all.
The youngest of the three creatures twitched
its large ears and asked, “If you are Will, does that make me Will too?”
“No…You must be something else.” Will spoke, holding his
head into the wind. He was overwhelmed at the feeling of being something.
The youngest thought long and hard, then cried
out. “I am Mari!”
Now that the oldest and the youngest knew what
they were, they began saying their titles back and forth at each other with
much joy and pride.
“Mari!” “Will!” “Mari” “Will”
All the while the third creature looked on and
thought the other two were rather odd. She wasn’t quite sure why she felt this
way, but it seemed like, Will and Mari, just didn’t go about it the right way.
She scrutinized the other two for some time, then lost interest. She looked
down into the water and saw an image. She glanced quickly at Will and Mari, who were
still speaking back and forth. Not wanting to share her discovery, she looked
back down upon the vision. Reaching out carefully with a furry appendage, she
tapped it. The image rippled in the waves. She could see that as she removed
her limb, placing it back underneath her, the image also moved a limb. In a stroke of pure fate, or perhaps chance.
This third creature realized that she was looking at herself! Then she got
angry. Her realization told her that she looked just like the other two
creatures on the log.
It was then that Will and Mari turned to see
the third creature glaring at them. Mari spoke, “Why do you look the way you do at
us?” “Yes, please tell us what is making your hair rise, as it
is.” Will chimed.
The third creature stood up and backed away
towards the end of the small log. She knew she wanted to be different than the
others, but whom ever had created them had not made it easy. So in a loud voice
she cried out to the heavens.
Will and Mari cowered their heads low as the
voice echoed.
“I AM A CAT!” The third creature had voiced and promptly
jumped high into the air, then came back down onto the surface of the log.
Will and Mari, not expecting the sudden shift
in the log; fell and slipped into the waves.
The Cat looked down and saw that she was alone
on the log. Purred in contentment and promptly curled up and went to sleep.
Many years later, Will and Mari washed up upon
the shore of a new land. They had lost their fur and rear most appendage.
Learning to be something new was difficult but in time they figured everything
out and renamed themselves. Man and Woman.
One day Man and Woman were walking high in the
mountains. They were startled at a loud roar that came from atop the tallest
peak. When their eyes squinted against the sun’s warm rays, they couldn’t
believe what they saw. For there standing upon a small log perched
upon the peak was the Cat! Cat had grown much larger as well.
Man and Woman screamed and began to run down
the mountainside. But Cat was quicker and jumped in front of their path. Cat growled at them. “Serve, love and feed me
and in return you will rule this world.”
Man and Woman knew they were no match against
Cat’s mighty strength. So they agreed.
Time has moved on since those days. But all
has happened just as Cat set into place. All across our country, you can see
men and woman, scurrying around working diligently; only to return home to give
their cat’s love and attention and eager and ready to serve their feline in
anyway necessary.
Man and Woman rule their world just as the
deal had been made. Yet, the Cats always remember the true order of things just
in case the hairless ones get any ideas.
