Eye Spy Changes

A Chapter by Wolfwind

“Stone, Jessica Stone.” The fourteen year old teenager spoke, striking the Bond pose and let a sly smile come to her lips as she turned towards the mirror. She held the pose for a few moments then her smile disappeared with a heavy sigh.

“Who am I kidding,” the young girl spoke, “I’m just a teenager living in small town California.”

Tossing the squirt gun across her bedroom she fell back onto her bed frustrated. Closing her eyes Jessica let her imagination take her into the world were she felt needed and wanted. Wishing and dreaming that she could be that somebody she truly wanted to be, not that nobody that everyone seemed to view her as.

Sitting up abruptly, her eyes coming open, “I’m smart, I’m strong. Why do they look at me as if I’m an invisible rock?”

Realizing the house was feeling like a cage at the moment, Jessica slipped off her bed, grabbed her bag and headed down stairs.

“Where are you off to Sweetie?” Her mother asked from the kitchen.

“Going for walk,” Jessica called back.

“Just be back by six, your Uncle Harry is coming by for dinner. I’m sure he’d like to see you.”

Jessica rolled her eyes and closed the front door on her way out.

“Oh yah… Uncle Harry. What a joke.” Grumbling at the thought of having to listen to her uncle’s stories of when he did this or did that for the FBI. She wondered if he knew that everyone already knew how he had been washed out because he fell asleep on the job all the time.

Jessica walked at a quick pace past her school, turning the corner towards the medium sized two story library. She thought some time checking out the new books might take her mind of her persistent invisible feeling.

The sound a car slowing next to her cause her to glance across her should. A black Dodge Charger came to a stop, its passenger side window sliding down. A female, who Jessica though was perhaps in her early twenties smiled.

“Excuse me miss? Do you know where I might find Prentis and Britch?”

Jessica put on her social face and smiled, “Yah sure. It’s down about four blocks on the left. Ya can’t miss its driveway. It’s the only opening in that huge cement wall they have around the place.”

“Thank you so much.” The lady replied.

Jessica watched as the woman in the Dodge speed back up, closing the window and headed down the road. “How could you not be able to find that eye soar of a company in this small town?” Her thoughts flowed, as she wondered what a young female would be doing there on a Sunday. The company, from what she remembered from the news article, was a high tech bio chemical company. There had been a lot of resistance from the townsfolk to let it move into town, but the mayor had told the locals that it would bring fresh revenue and jobs. The debate had been dropped after that.

Jessica shrugged and continued to walk down the sidewalk towards the library. Crossing the quiet street, she took the steps to the front of the building. She let herself feel a small amount of pride in her town as it was probably the only library in the state that was open on Sundays.

Reaching for the door handle, she let her hand stop. Screeching tires and metal scraping concrete made her snap her head around and look down the street. Forgetting about the library she took off at a run, seeing a black SUV having rolled upside down through the center of the next intersection.

“I hope they’re okay?” She wondered as she raced down the sidewalk to see if she could help.

Jessica reached the corner and slowed, walking around the vehicle’s front end that had come to rest against a tree. She stopped. On the other side of the intersection was the Black Dodge she had seen the stranger in a short time before. Jessica stared at what she was seeing, unable to move and not sure what to do. The woman was standing next to the SUV with a gun pointed down at the driver who was struggling to get out of the vehicle.

Jessica slipped behind another large tree, peering out at the scene.

She heard the young woman speaking to the driver. “You didn’t think we would let you make a base of operations in the states again did you?

“You won’t stop us.” The driver wheezed, coughing up blood.

The woman smiled, “Tell your boss, Kaitlynn said hello.”

Jessica jumped as the gun the woman was holding went off. She watched the man go limp and then dissolve in a cloud of green energy. She wasn’t sure what had just happened, but when her eyes came off the ground where the man had been, the young woman’s eyes were locked with hers.

“Oh crap!” Jessica whispered and did what her instincts told her to do, she ran.

“Stop,” The woman with the gun shouted, “It’s not what you think.” She exclaimed.

Jessica sprinted down the sidewalk and burst through a gap in a hedge. She could hear the engine of the ladies Dodge roar to life.

“Oh s**t, oh s**t, what did I just get myself into,” Jessica exclaimed as she broke from the hedges on the opposite side of the city park, crossing the street and continued down a dirt access road. Nearly out of breath, she tried to listen for the Dodge as she neared the end of the dirt stretch. Passing the fence line, Jessica slammed her hands against the hood of the Dodge which had just come barreling to a stop on the cross street.

Rolling away from the woman’s car she sprinted down the road as fast as she could. She heard foot steps coming up from behind. “No!” She screamed as she felt arms grab her from behind.

Both women tumbled to the ground, Jessica ending up on her back, staring into the barrel of the others gun.

“Listen to me!” The woman spoke firmly, holding the teenager down to the ground by the collar of her shirt. “I’m not going to hurt you. I’m a special agent. What happened back there wasn’t supposed to be witnessed by anyone. Yet, since you saw the guy vanish, I need to talk to you. Are you going to keep running? Or will you cooperate?”

Jessica’s chest rose and fell from all the running. She looked up at the woman and nodded. “What other choice do I have,” she thought, aware that there was a gun still pointed at her.

“Yah, I’ll cooperate.” She replied.

“Okay, that’s better.” The woman rose off the young girl and holstered the weapon. Offering a hand to help her up, she spoke, “We’ll take my care to someplace private. We can talk there.”

Jessica, who was now on her feet and dusting herself off looked to the woman and asked, “Can I see some identification?”

Kaitlynn paused for a moment, thinking, “I hate it when they ask that.” Pulling out her fake I.D. and handing it towards the girl, “Sure thing.”

Jessica looked over the credentials. Special Agent Kaitlynn M Croft, Serial number 13002613, Central Intelligence Agency.

“Okay. Thanks.” Jessica spoke, handing them back to the woman. Something in the back of her mind was speaking to her. She tried suppressing the thought that she might just be getting into more trouble, but she couldn’t. Something felt off, but she didn’t know what.

The two rode in silence as Kaitlynn drove out of town, turning off onto a side road that led up towards a remote lookout area in the hills. When the car came to a stop and the engine silenced, the older woman looked over at Jessica.

“I never wanted to get you involved and I wish you weren’t. But with what you saw back there, you are involved, regardless of what you or I wish.”

Jessica replied, her voice somewhat nervous, “I can just forget the whole thing Mam. Go on as if it never happened.” She tried to be convincing, but figured it wouldn’t be that good.

“Miss. You saw a man vanish into nothing after being shot. That doesn’t happen regularly.  Does it?” Kaitlynn’s words came across with a hint of compassion.

“No.” Jessica mumbled, turning her head to look at her fidgeting hands.

“What I’m going to tell you now, can’t be repeated to anyone.” Kaitlynn spoke calmly but firmly. “Not that anyone would actually believe you, but just the same, it must remain a secret.”

The teenager nodded, “Okay.”

“During WWII there was a scientist by the name of Hauptner. He was one of Hitlers most trusted advisors, or so the history books say. The truth is, he was the one pulling the strings. After the war, he and several other individuals vanished to a top secret laboratory somewhere in the frozen tundra of Siberia. There with the help of an outside expert, whom I can’t speak of, created a time shift device. The man who you saw me shoot today was one of his soldiers that he’s been sending forward in time to create a new Reich, a Fourth Reich. These soldiers appear as normal as you or I, however when you kill them, they loose molecular cohesion in this realm of time and are sent back to where they came from.”

Kaitlynn paused watching Jessica’s eyes for some sort of a reaction. Seeing a level of disbelief and curiosity, she continued.

“I don’t work for the CIA. That ID I showed you, is only for dealing with local law enforcement when they get in the way. I work for an agency known as the Manor. My job, along with others is to track down Hauptner’s soldiers and send them back to where they came from.” Kaitlynn glanced out the car window momentarily before landing the words that she knew would bring forth a reaction.

“The Manor is who you’ll be working for from now on. Your life as you’ve known it will cease.”

Jessica’s eyes shot up to the woman’s, “What?!”

“I’m sorry. You’ve seen to much already.”

Jessica shook her head, realizing that part of her was excited in twisted way, “What if I refuse?”

Kaitlynn looked directly at the young girl. “I’m sure you’re smart enough to figure that out.” As her words echoed into Jessica’s mind, the young girl saw the woman’s hand, have taken up a position on the holster of her pistol.

Jessica’s gaze slipped back from the gun towards the woman, “I’ll need to tell my parents something.”

Kaitlynn shook her head. “That won’t be possible. In time, they will receive a letter saying that you left on your own accord and are safe. That is all they can ever know.”

“But what about my things, my clothes and other stuff that’s important to me?”

“They are part of a past that no longer exists for you.”

Jessica sat in silence for several minutes, her mind taking in everything and churning it around in her head. Finally she asked, “Just where will I be going?”

Kaitlynn smiled, “A beautiful private compound in a remote area of Montana. It’s where you will learn, train and start your new life.”

            “When do I leave?”

The older woman turned and started the car, its engine rumbling to life. “We’ll start there now. The couple of days on the road will give you and I time to get to know each other.” Turning, she offered her hand for a handshake, “Kaitlynn M Croft.  Nice too meet you.”

Jessica slowly reached out and shook Kaitlynn’s hand, “Stone, Jessica Stone.”
