Dark

My name is Debra and I am a Danish Jew. It is 1942, and I live in a peaceful happy world. I live with my mom and dad, and my little brother David. I go to school like any other girl, but I am totally unaware of the danger that is happening in the world. One day I happened to be at the town store and I hear talk about the Nazis. They talked of the Nazi’s cruelty and the death of all Jews. It set me to thinking that I was grateful my world was not like that. My world began to fall apart though, one by one the danger got closer to me and all I cared for. Darkness was spreading like a disease all over Europe.

My father was fed up with staying and he said we were leaving tonight. We crept out into the darkness, it was cold and I could see my breath coming out like an icy fog. We went through the dark alleyways. I was on the verge of tears, would I ever see the place I called home again? We finally reached the dock, there was a man waiting for us on an old wooden fishing boat. My mom paid the man our money for the trip. He opened the hatch and we all hopped in. He closed the door and the light from the deck was shut out. I couldn’t see anything, not even my hand in front of my face, but I could feel my brother stirring beside me. I couldn’t see my mom or dad, but I sensed their love and protection. There were other people with us, how many I did not know. The hold smelled like rotten fish, because they would dump the fish on us

One night I heard voices, men speaking. I heard the Nazis! I was so scared; they were asking the captain if he had any Jews on board. I thought my life was over, I kept waiting for the hatch to open, but it never did. I felt the tight fear that was clamping my heart weaken. When I woke up the hatch was being lifted open. Was it the Nazis? It was only the captain he said we had made it to Sweden. I poked my head out and I saw the sun just beginning to rise and the darkness melting away. I thought to myself, no matter how much dark is pressed upon us, the light will always come. All of us, Jews, will see the light coming to greet us and we will rise again from the shadows we were in. My name is Debra and I am proud to be a Danish Jew.
