Game of Eagle and Sun

Game of Eagle and Sun

A Poem by Wolf_Lord
"

An Eagles View of their Sacred Duty

"

Game of Eagle and Sun

Swiftly the landscape below does flee from the mighty strokes

As the rippling muscles in thy chest bulge with the strain

In terror doth the shining face of the sun now retreat

As thee, chase it past the mountaintops to distant plains

An ancient game my kind has played since the dawn of time

For fear of our kind is that which brings on the domain of night

As a fledgling did my father teach me the rules of this game

Just as did his father before him chase the sun from sight

It is not malicious nor do we view it as our prey

We chase the sun ever westward for fear it will die

I wait for that moment of weakness; see it falter: drop

Blazing face now tired, weary, yes, it falls from the sky

Yet without its fear of Eagles, straight to Earth would it fall

An Eagles destiny is to scare it beyond the edge of Earth

Lest its face forever darken and the Earth deprived of light

A sacred duty; a sacred trust: For which Eagles were birthed

Therefore, with cry of battle and talons out, do we chase it west

Flee me cowardly sun or I shall catch you; tear, rip and rend

I will devour you whole and spit out your bones (do I tell it)

Then utter a cry of triumph as it passes Earths great bend

I now soar upon the Earths ascending heat for a moments rest

My sacred duty now discharged for it thinks it’s won the race

Yet knowing that if I really wished, that it could not escape

Then I descend a lazy spiral as darkness takes its place

To my lofty perch in the sky; my nest amongst the crags

To await the sun’s arrival as from the east now will it peek

Fleeing ever higher thinking to get itself beyond my grasp

Never for a moment suspecting that its life; I do not seek

So has it been; so shall it be: This game of Eagle and Sun

He playing the sacred prey, while the Eagles do play the beast

He wakes thus the world bringing us sight and gentle warmth

Therefore by that light shall I teach the fledglings

To chase the sun

To bring it fright

And in its warmth to feast
