Mind Games

A Story by Starr
"

She never understood the meaning... and caved... further down...

"
You know that shy girl downstairs, Apartment 23A,  the one that never leaves. She hides her face with a black hoodie because of those damn scars. She closes her eyes and prays they won't see that she is dying inside. She can't hold on, when all they do is judge. "You are pitiful, in every single way." They mock and they point, they yell and they scream. She looks at the plastered ground all day. "I was marked from 12, when I was assaulted, broken down, feeling so useless." She sighs and keeps walking, when a bullet sinks into her leg. She gasp in pain and falls to her knees. People keep walking by, just laughing. She hobbles to a stance and grabs onto a pole, "Go to hell you pitiful thing, you shouldn't be alive." She leans against the pole and a car blazes by and halfway up the street it slams to a halt and starts backing up. She closes her eyes and waits for the shot, ringing of death. A figure starts running at her and wraps their arm around her waist, she opens her eyes and sees a woman, black hair and green eyes. She pulls her to car and sits her down, shuts the door and speeds off. "Why were u on the streets late at night?" She sighs, "Every night I go to the store." "Why?" She shakes her head and looks up, "Assaulted at 12, left with scars. Pretty simple, I'm not afraid to talk." She grabs her hands and hurries to the hospital.

She gets the girl, limping, into the hospital and to registration and they rush her back. The lady never left and sat in those uncomfortable waiting chairs of a hospital. It took two hours and a doctor walked out to check for any family, anything. The woman in the back waved and stood up and hurried to his side. "Is she ok?" He smiles, "Perfect, how did this happen?" She shook her head, "Ask her." He shook his head and lead her down the bright white hallway to room 23. On the white hospital bed was the girl she just saved, and she looked even better as she laid there. "Please, what is your name?" The woman shuffled over to the bed, "Seraphine and yours?" The girl shook her head, "Apolline." Seraphine leaned down and carefully hugged her, "Its ok. You can tell me everything." Apolline sighed, "Not much but ok."

"I was 12 years old, walking down the streets with my green bike. A man pounced on me like a lion, no, he was a teenager. He looked drunk, beyond drunk. He covered my mouth and threw me over his broad shoulder and hauled me off down the dark ally. He dropped my down in the dirt and looked at me. He mumbled words and before I knew it..." She started whimpering, and Seraphine was there for support. "It's ok, you can skip that part." She nodded her head and continued, "After that he slapped me, kicked me, took a blade to my face. He cut me over and over and over again. That's why i have these scars."

Seraphine gripped her hand, "You are well and alive, I'm here for you." Apolline shook her head and slowly fell sleep from exhaustion. Seraphine laid down in the chair and soon drifted off, when a rumble in the night woke her. In the dark room was a tall figure, "You shouldn't be alive." Seraphine blinked her eyes, she was frozen and couldn't scream. He plunged a knife into her and a mumbled 'squeal' came from her. The man looked at Seraphine and took off out the door. Seraphine jumped up and seen Apolline bleeding and was heavily breathing. "Sera, it's ok, I know my place. Thanks." She coughed and kept me from going to get help. "I hired him, I don't deserve my breath, please d-do not blame yourself." She took in a shallow breath and she fell pale. Her chest never rose, her eyes were closed, and paler than the moon. Seraphine ran out, "Help me, someone attacked her, I just found her, please save her, please." The staff ran in and started attempting to revive her. "Mam, you best leave, this girl mutters you killed her." Seraphine shook her head, "N-no, she hired a guy!" "Mam, leave or you will be arrested." Seraphine grabbed her bag and ran out, faster down the street.

The wind hit her face and she glanced in a puddle, so many scars on her face, so much damn counseling, she looked at her leg, the bullet from 2 years ago. The counselor wouldn't quit, he wouldn't stop, she wouldn't stop, they wouldn't stop! She kept running and running, no name change can control the rumors, stop the hurt, or make her forget her past. "I give up!" She stood on the railing, tied back her black hair, and locked her hands around her locket. "I will see you soon." She looked behind her and looked over the side at the raging river, 100 feet down, raging water, and sharp rocks further down. I could finally leave. She looked up at the pale moon and closed her eyes as she stepped off and started plummeting to the raging blue water below....
