"Why now..." Juliet asked as she leaned against the window of her third-floor dorm room. The room was originally set up for two people but her dorm-mate had been kicked out due to being caught at too many keggers. Having her own room didn't bother Juliet so much. Many a night she and her boyfriend, Warren, had laid in her single bed...A sigh left Juliet's lips before she could finish the thought.

Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?

There'd be no more nights like that. Warren had decided she wasn't enough for him. She had given him everything. Her time, her affection, her virginity, her love. What wasn't enough?

It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Tears streamed down Juliet's cheeks as she fell back to sit on the bed, burying her face in the pillow to sob yet again. She'd already been trapped by the buildings RA, Darlene. Darlene had found her curled up on one of the pillows earlier today and tried to be a comfort. Though the grad student meant well, Juliet was positive she had no idea of the pain tearing through her chest. There were term papers on Darlene's mind, final projects to get ready. She didn't really have the time to worry about some lowly sophomore.

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you

Juliet didn't want to give Darlene any more strife on her account. Pulling her face from the sodden pillow, she felt herself take a deep breath and look up, her mind clear again at last. She had no point right now.

She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

She’d never allowed someone to become her whole world before. Juliet was always so cautious with falling in love. When she was younger she’d had her heart broken enough times to give her a lifetime of heartache…yet nothing felt like this. Some people believed that when your heart breaks it feels like a piece of glass shattering in her chest but at the moment Juliet felt it was so much more. Rising from her bed she started to casually walk the silent halls of her dormitory. She’d run her fingers down the wall as she moved, literally feeling the silence surround her as she reminded herself of her own heartache. It wasn’t a shatter but a more lasting sort of pain.

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Juliet imagined her heart in Warren’s hands. She’d imagine it pulsing gleefully in his hand only to watch as he slowly began to squeeze it. Her chest started go tight and her breath caught in her throat as he started to squeeze harder and harder. The pulse started to become more erratic and violent as his grip became unbearable. She’d do anything to stop this sort of pain. Juliet nudged open the window in the hallway looking down the three stories to the ground below. It really didn’t look so far down from here now. Taking a few steps closer she’d lean against the window’s ledge.

There was a time you let me know
What's real and going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dark was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Just as Juliet looked ready to step from the window a sound would stop her. A piano was playing somewhere in the dorm. Briefly she’d look over her shoulder into the hallway. The sound of the melody was so sad it got her to snap to her senses. Surprised suddenly to find herself hanging out a third-story window, Juliet would step inside and tug the window shut with a snap. The music seemed louder now, echoing down the hall from the common room. Juliet felt her heart ache again but--it wasn’t as painful as before. It wasn’t her own pain. She was feeling someone else’s.

Maybe there's a God above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you

There was a young man sitting in the common room. He’d uncovered one of the upright pianos in the room and was playing very softly. His head was bowed as he played and Juliet could hear a very distinctive sniff. The music encased her now and she moved towards him. She’d seen this guy before--usually with a dark-haired girl, laughing or making out here in the common room. Putting two and two together…Juliet realized he was going through exactly what she was going through.

It's not a cry you can hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Reaching the young man, Juliet would place a hand on his shoulder as the song wound to its end. He’d look up to her with big red eyes that said everything without saying a word. Juliet learned his name was Mark. That night Juliet and Mark realized even when you feel the most lost and the most alone there’s someone out there at that moment who feels just as lost and alone as you do.
