When We Were Young

When We Were Young

A Poem by SunnyDaze

When we were young, we would frolic in fields of flowers taller than ourselves

Loving life, loving one another

No boundaries, no fear, no judgment

Just life

Happiness

Peace and Unity

We would giggle as the grass tickled our feet

We would smile as the sun leaned way down to kiss our cheeks with its warmth saying goodbye for the day and making way for the cool night

When we were young, we would lay out in the backyard and count the stars

We would talk about how far into the galaxy we’d go if we ever figured out how to build our own rocket ship

We would argue whether aliens existed or not

We would agree to disagree

We would arm wrestle

When we were young, we supported each other, we loved each other, we even cried together

Sometimes I wonder what happened to us

But then I realize we are no longer young

We’re older now, the sun no longer greets us with kindness but with a blistering heat that wrinkles and scars our faces

The grass no longer tickles our feet for we never leave the house without shoes

We no longer lay out in the yard counting stars for it’s so hard to get up off the ground now

We never talk about aliens anymore for we know they can’t possibly exist

Man, has already been to the moon and we never finished building our rocket ship

We no longer arm wrestle for our muscles are too weak

We are old now but we have lived.

We have always supported each other, we have always loved each other and we still cry together on occasion.

We are old now but our arms are still reaching for the stars, our minds forever wondering and our hearts…
