His eyesA Poem by Winter DeClan
I'll never forget when I looked into his eyes for the first time. I saw him, before he even saw me. He walked in, immediately looking around the store. I stood, phone pressed to my ear, in the back right corner. My heart pounded in my ears and my hands shook as I whispered, "I see you." I told him where I was and turned around, lifting my hand and touched the fabric of some ugly orange blazer, phone still pressed to my ear, anxiously. My thoughts were a jumbled mess. I couldn't think straight, until I hear him chuckle behind me. My thoughts went blank as I slowly turned around and lifted my head looking at him. He stood awkwardly, hanging up the phone, locking it and slipped it into his right pocket of his purple and neon green basketball shorts. I felt my phone vibrate and click, signaling the call ending, and with a delayed reaction, lowered the phone slipping it into my right back pocket. He stood to the side, almost beside me, body angled towards mine, hands to his sides as he scanned the nearly empty store. I watched him, quietly speaking, "Can I hug you now?" I trailed off. He smiled and answered, "I don't know, can you?" I lifted my arms slightly, a barely noticeable change and before I could lower them, he stepped forward sliding his arms around me. I lowered my nose to the base of his neck, inhaling deeply smelling his simple, yet alluring cologne. I felt safe, and before I could think of anything else, he stepped back. I lowered my arms, but I needed to feel him again. I reached out and took his hands gently. Pale, cold, elegant fingers held mine. I looked up from his hands at his wide green, gray eyes and smiled. "It's okay. Everything's okay." I reassured him. He slowly withdrew his hands, and I let him. My previously shaking hands now ceased to quiver at the comfort of his proximity. We were safe. We did it.
