And we were told we were free.

And we were told we were free.

A Poem by Winona
"

Life's expectations and our obliviousness to completely false assurances.

"
Everything is so beautiful,
But we live within the boundaries,
Set for us by strangers.
Wasting our youth between brick walls,
To learn.

We should learn of the ways of a tourist.
In New York, Georgia, Venice.
And sail to the edge of the ocean.
Spend infinite nights, forgetting the day.
But we spend our adulthood in an office,
To provide.

We should provide manic giggles,
And endless games of 'No, I love you more.'
Heavenly smiles, millions of polaroids.
And stories of their parents,
Disguised as fairy tale characters.
With flowing red hair and strong jawlines.

But we spend the ends of lives, full of regrets,
Of following the system, scared to rebel.
Terrified of vandalizing our own minds,
And when we lay, in crystal mirrors we will see,
How paralyzed we are..
When we were told we were free.

Now this one is excellent. I understand a longing for a fresh set of eyes, for innocence. I understand the author realizes how jaded we are becoming, taking everything for granted and mindlessly accepting conformity. I like it until the last line. I don't buy it. This isn't a technical criticism as much as a disagreement, but that's neither here nor there.
I really liked this piece.
