students, favorite sports and sportsmen, and reasons why students select
certain sportsmen as their role model. This will help not only understand the
general sporting pattern of students but can also help formulate policies to
promote unpopular sport and improve infrastructures of popular sports. The hypothesis of the study is that gender
influence sports preference among students and popular teams and sportsmen are
selected on the basis of their performance in the sport. The purpose of the
survey was to identify whether gender influence sports preference among student
and reasons why student sport or like a certain sporting personnel. Research
questions were formulated to answer specific research questions that included: • What is the preferred sport among
students? • Which is the most popular sporting
team among students? • Which is the most popular sport
between soccer and Tennis? • Why do students prefer certain
sporting personnel? The opened ended
questionnaire was disturbed to randomly selected students. The data was
analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result and discussion Eight students
responded to the questionnaire. There was equal representation in terms of
gender in the survey with 50% being male students and 50% being female
students. There was a great variation in
terms of the best team choices among respondent. However, a common trend was
observed among male respondent with most male students naming soccer teams as
their best team. Spain soccer teams including Barcelona, Real Madrid, and
Athletico Madrid are the most popular among students (26.6%). The choice of the
best team correlated with the reason the best team was selected. Most of the respondents
showed nationality inclination while selecting a team with most male respondent
selecting Spanish teams because the team was from Spain. Another reason for
choosing a preferred team was the success of the team. 25% of the respondent
cited previous success as the main reason they selected a specific team. Soccer and football are
the liked sport 100% of the student stating that they like sports during 26. %
of the student like tennis. Unlike the hypothesis formulated gender did not
influence the choice of preferred sport.
However, an indicative correlation between female and preference to
tennis (p<0.5). However, when it comes to favorite sport, soccer is favorite
sport among students (62.5%). Volleyball, gymnastics and tennis represented
12.5% each of the population. The choice
of the best player varied across the participants, but soccer players dominated
the list of favorite players (75%). The reason given for
selecting the best player also varied among the participants. Most of the
respondent selected the favorite player because they believed they were the
best players and the admired their prowess.
Conclusion Sporting activities in colleges form an important element of not only social life but also academic progress. Understanding why students select specific sports, teams and favorite players is fundamental in understanding how student use role models provided by sportsmen. According to the study, gender does not influence sports preference, and favorite team and sportsmen are selected because of their performance.
