Once Upon a TimeA Story by Amy Whetzellthe beginning of somethingThere once was a lady She worked hard at everything in her life From job to fun times to her loves She had all she thought she’d ever need, But eventually came a day when she realized she had a want instead This want wasn’t difficult, or so it seemed; This want wasn’t selfish, and it was good
Once upon a time, there came into her life this man, whom she known as a teen This man claimed a love so fierce for the lady, and the lady felt loved This man came to her, with promises galore. He promised her needs be done, all her dreams had come true, promised he had all she wanted This man said to the lady, “You’ll not go lacking, nor will our children. I’ll take care of you for all days to come.”
Once upon a time doesn’t always end up with “…and they lived happily ever after.”
This man did not hold his promises to mean everything as the lady truly did. The man changed his mind, for adulthood scared him, parenthood scared him, fidelity scared him. He broke earth with no delay, telling the lady, “I’ll keep in touch. Though we can’t be together, you’ll not go lacking, nor will our children.” Over time, the lady came to know this man would not return, and realized his every promise and word were as hollow inside as his own heart towards her. Her heart grew cold with rage when she learned of the life he left her for: a new love and new offspring for him to raise. Time and time after this fateful event, the lady was guarded, no man was able to penetrate the wall she had built around her heart. Though many a man did try, not a one succeeded. Until…
Once upon a time, a new man stumbled upon the lady, in a crowded smoky bar. And his eyes put Caribbean oceans to shame. Without knowing what happened, without realizing what he’d done, this new man found a crack in the lady’s wall, and slipped right through it. Taking the initiative, the new man professed his feelings to the lady and, over time, he promised her the world. This new man promised she’d not go lacking, nor would their children. He promised all her dreams will come true. He promised to always be there if she should need him, and to always take care of her.
Once upon a time doesn’t always end up with “…and they lived happily ever after”, but sometimes it does.
...But it usually doesn't. © 2012 Amy Whetzell |
