Society

A Poem by Peregrinator7
"

One day I was writing when Society ambushed me...

"
One day I was writing
When Society ambushed me.
He took a magic vacuum and
Vacuumed the words off the page and my mind.
His face was the color of a tomato.
“Listen here,” he growled.
I apparently had his attention.
“I’m the society here, and I judge what right and what’s not.
You’re breakin’ my rules. Writing isn’t allowed.
Go and get crazy with your friends.
It’s much more fun.
You’re supposed to cram your time.
If you have some left, go and cram it some more.
You have time. You’re writing.
Writing is creativity.
Only Society Makers get creativity.”
“Dis yourself as much as possible!
It’s the only way to make you feel better.
More things. Better things will make you happy.
Bigger is better.
Don’t ever talk to strangers.
Mind your own business.
Stay in your own bubble, and for heaven’s sake, be as private as you can!
Don’t let anyone get near you.
You are what others say about you.”
And he went on like this, in some sort of endless rant
With “do this” and “don’t do that” littered around like empty soda cans.
When he was finally done, I just stared at him blankly.
“Sorry,” I said, “I wasn’t listening.”
“It’s sorta my thing, you know, to go against you. Nothing personal.”
“But!” I lifted my finger to stop him from leaving.
“You gave me a great idea.”
His whole being shook, like a malfunctioning machine.
Smoke coming out of his ears, Society stormed out the door.
He never bothered me again.
And so, I shall always swim against Society.
That is my final decision.
Try he might, Society will always push at me in vain.
He might bend me, but never break.
Thinking just that, I watched Society go that day.
I smiled, and lifted up my quill. The words came back.
And I continue to write.

The 3rd stanza is my 8th grade depiction of the "norm". I would change it, but then it would make it different...

I liked your thoughts and we must hold tightly to who we are. Not be shaped by fake people and naysayers. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry.

This is a wonderful piece. It reminds me of a Jack Kerouac/Steven Allen piece: "Goofing at the Table". Similar idea to your poem. I love Kerouac, so finding someone who expresses similar ideas in modernity is a definite win. Thanks for the read.
