Charlie Waited

A Story by Willys Watson

Charlie Waited

When visitors arrived if seemed like half of the people in his group wanted the attention of the visitors. But not Charlie. He held back, waiting and watching, in the back of them. But by late Saturday morning it seemed, to Charlie, that a third of the ones in his group were gown. Within a few minutes two older humans, a female and male visited them and with them was a younger female.

What the woman in charge told them was a couple were assigned to a tour overseas and, though they wanted to take Charlie with them, they couldn’t. Then she told then Charlie had his required shots and was housebroken. Charlie didn’t understand what the woman in charge was saying, but he know she was talking about him because he was the only in the group named Charlie.

When the younger female approached the group, the others still in the group vied for her attention, but she ignored them. When she slowly, carefully pressed her open palm against the bars Charlie slowly approached her. Perhaps it was in trusting his own instincts, but Charlie seemed to know she was the right one to share his life with.
