Not Exactly Mother Goose

Not Exactly Mother Goose

A Poem by Willys Watson
"

Just something silly I wrote while waiting for inspiration to write more serious verse.

"
NOT EXACTLY MOTHER GOOSE

If fish could swim backwards
and the Dodo Bird could fly,
would such an absurdity
cause the Giraffe to laugh
and the Alligator to cry?

If a Snowy Owl doesn’t give a hoot,
and a Mockingbird remains mute,
a Llama really hates human drama,
and a Platypus won’t make a fuss,
a Kangaroo just doesn’t like us,
a Wallaby really can climb trees,
a Brahma Bull is never sure,
a Leprechaun can’t find his loot
and again, the Owl doesn’t give a hoot,
while the Llama loves all animal drama,
and the Lizard won’t eat cooked gizzards,
or the Albatross keeps getting lost
and a Polar Bear can’t seem to floss,
or an Elephant can’t find it’s foot,
a Macaw quotes Shakespeare
and an Octopus can’t hear it well,
does this mean my really bad poem
might just cast me into hell?

Ha, ha, ha...This would be such a great poem for a children's book.. Although as an adult I loved it...
I looked through your stories, which I just do not have the time to read, to see if you had written any poems..And, voila I found this fun poem of yours..
I see you are from L.A... I grew up in Hollwywoodland...Yes, the bus from school to home said Hollywoodland on it...those were the days.

Good morning,

I love the rhythm and riddle-like feel of this. I'm trying to put a finger on exactly how and why, but this makes me feel like a kid again.

You wrote something special while waiting for inspiration.

I loved the rowdy childhood appeal. I felt reading this. A nice write.

It was a fun read, anyways! Imagining it being read aloud to a tableau of animal pageantry or a short film. Quite enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.
