HELEN OF TROY'S TOYS

HELEN OF TROY'S TOYS

A Poem by Willys Watson

HELEN OF TROY'S TOYS

Helen of Troy preferred her own toys
because she simply didn’t trust boys.

The young boys rebelled, some were jailed.
and after their bail they all raised hell,

and the siege began on sea and land
because they could never understand

that a wooden horse could not provide
the protection to let her decide.

The right kind of Trojan, the right man,
was all it took to give her that look:

the look that would launch a thousand sighs.

love the ending...sighs instead of ships...
I took a cruise through this poem...and thought my wooden horse was real, it threw me off a couple times.
I am reminded of Poe..."Helen, thy beauty is to me like those Nycean barks of yore that gently oer a perfumed sea, the weary wayworn wanderer bore"--
Oh those Wooden horses...toys to make her smile, but she is looking for something else all the while.

I really like the theme of this poem, reminds me of Margaret Atwood's poetry on similar subject matter. Great title too.

Thank you. I write both more serious verse and some more whimsical verse, like this one.
Interesting poem with a seemingly erotic undertone.
