DEFUSING THE THREAT

DEFUSING THE THREAT

A Poem by Willys Watson

DEFUSING THE THREAT

As applied experience knows,

when freedom is endangered the why
is seldom more important than the
where or the always ominous when.

The when can calculate every
potentially evasive path.
Where over-rides the misfortune
of becoming easy targets.

The why is the motivation
of greed, religious fanatics
and leaders with grand illusions:

each abusing their forced power.

Fate dictates the avoiding of the
age old, unjustified Ostrich myth
so that faith and knowledge smoothly merge.

Still, reaching your new level eight
while playing your cute game boy toy
does not translate well to real life,
nor maintain our freedom’s safeguards:

awareness towards democracy’s
foes or a leader’s countless lies
or empowering of the fringe.

True freedom requires diligence.

A bit of due diligence wouldn't go amiss at the moment. Not that scrutiny has ever bothered the snouts in the trough brigade.

Such a shame really, that in a world of plenty, there are still children with empty bellies and even emptier eyes; that's the worst abuse of power.

This is a poem that should be tattooed on the foreheads of all those who heap such misery on the innocent.

Beccy.

Thank you. And the battle of people with moral fiber is ongoing as long as greed controls politics.

I think your last line says it all. If we ever had it, we lost it, and not just since this President or Congress. I suppose it's been a slow leak since the 1700s, when we might've had the "why" thing right. When the first few lines in the Declaration of Independence said who we were as a people, and why we believe what we believed. I think it was more than greed and religious fanatics (isn't that what we wanted to escape?). Yes, we've lost diligence, and you've captured that so well in this poem.

Yes it does. A fantastic social comment here. A very clever way to put it for sure. I need to come back and have a look at your short stories, I love short stories, but wanted to pay respect to your earlier review, so shall read them in due course. Great Work!

Great work, like the wisdom and it felt intense with emotion. Nicely written.

Thank you. I write serious and I write silly and this is one of the more serious verse.
