Lessons Unlearned

Lessons Unlearned

A Poem by Willys Watson

LESSONS UNLEARNED

The history of the world,

from the mundane to the magnificent,

the malevolent to the miraculous,

is meticulously recorded and maintained.

The history of our lives,

from singular acts with kinder intent

to mass slaughters invoked through dogma’s wrath,

events that generate consequences,

is forever noted

by a power higher

than a technology fueled government

that distorts the truth and champions greed’s lies.

The history of our fates

will be determined by a greater Conscience

that disdains exclusive self-righteousness

and the enforcement of their own beliefs,

and It’s final verdict,

clandestinely concealed,

etched into grains of sand by gentle hands,

will be read when rightful inheritors,

non pious peacemakers,

can replenish the land.
