A wooden rabbit

A wooden rabbit

A Poem by willweb

~

She chased a wooden rabbit

through a forest colored green

Down a path with curvy corners

of the likes she’d never seen

He was tinted like a rainbow,

reds and blues and dusty pink,

Yellows, purples and some orange,

every shade that you can think

She had seen him in the garden,

eating carrots by the pound

Shouting out, “They’re not for bunnies,”

as he darted ‘cross the ground

With a tail of painted cedar

and two ears of treated pine

Sanded smooth around the edges

with abrasive, extra fine

He was hipping, he was hopping,

he was jumping in the air

With a little rabbit smirk as if

he didn’t have a care

She was giggling, pursuing,

as her hair did find the wind

Always looking for a shortcut

or a new path to begin

While the bunny ran like lightning,

underbrush went by real fast

Hiding deep within the thicket

as the girl went racing past

Searching every nook and cranny,

while the evergreens all waved

When she grabbed a piece of celery,

in her pocket she had saved

Then she found a shaded alcove,

sat there quiet, not a peep

And she closed her eyes, just slightly

to pretend she was asleep

Well, the bunny found her resting

with the vegetable in hand

With his tummy oh so hungry

and the celery so grand

When he took a bite she grabbed him

and she hugged him very tight

And this little wooden rabbit

found it all to be alright

Now the two of them they wander,

through the forest colored green

Having so much fun together,

it is such a wondrous scene

There were only now two worries,

whether mornings, whether nights

For her, splinters were the problem,

for the hare, it was termites

I made this wooden rabbit garden decoration (pictured) and shared it with a fellow poet on this site yesterday and thought...I can write a poem about it, so I did.
I hope you like it.

Reminds me of one of Aesop's Fables, or closer to home, one of Dave Brown's offerings. I wonder why the girl was so entranced by a wooden rabbit. Perhaps she believed love is a many splintered thing.

Poor rabbit, having termites to contend with. But poor girl too, she only wants to hug it, but ends up with splinters! Hope she has some tweezers and salon, and maybe some sandpaper to give him a good rub down.
😊
A most excellent adventure from you once more Will.

I read this aloud to my eight year old daughter. She loved it. She was out chasing the real things just yesterday. Bunnies are her favorite animals. There were two chasing each other in circles at the end of our driveway and she wanted to see how close she could get. It turns out there were three young bunnies. She got about twenty feet from them before they stopped their game of tag and hopped away into the brush. Then she tracked another two in our backyard with similar results. I like your rainbow bunny creation too.

An enjoyable read, nicely written with a carefree and frolicking will and pen. Fine craftsmanship there as well which is apparent in the image posted of the garden decoration. Great how you made the wooden rabbit come to vibrant life through this poem. Wonderful.
Cheers

Thanks a bunch Pete. I am thrilled you liked it.
A fun read indeed. Multicolored and in a hurry. It brought back memories of Alice but she must have been on something psychedelic, mushrooms maybe? lol. A great garden decoration and an equally wonderful poem.
