"Hello"

"Hello"

A Poem by willweb

I dreamt she had called when my phone started ringing,

I’d set a tone that was special to her

I glanced at the screen though I don’t have my glasses,

could be her name but the whole things a blur

Over the years I have constantly worried,

never again would I hear her sweet voice

Wondering if she was healthy and happy,

sitting in silence, I hadn’t a choice

But here it was, I had hoped she would call me,

something inside told me we’d never part

We were in love, one that should last forever,

always her beauty would live in my heart

What would I say after all these years passing,

I was so nervous I shook like a leaf

Maybe the same or would I sound much older

or would she notice my chattering teeth

I should relax, I was acting quite crazy,

all will be fine this is not something new

It’s just a dream that I’ve dreamt for a long time,

finally, that dream seemed that it might come true

Well, this was it, as I reached out to answer

“Hello,” I said, speaking into the phone

“Hi, we’re calling about your car’s extended warranty”

Damn it to hell. Oh, I just should have known

Just this hour I was thinking of how we over the years have remained in touch with family that have moved overseas, over Christmases and time zones by voice calls over rotary dial phones. And how spammers and scammers had pushed us all to mobile phones and social media. The last two lines have revealed the last nail on the coffin of the landline phone, as all our personal details include those numbers for calls such as these. It's been a crazy world but we had blinded ourselves to it by scrolling and diverting ourselves away from such annoyances.

Gosh, the aching buildup of hope....and the letdown of reality (with a funny twist). Love this! So great to see a little humor on wanting. Great job!

Makes sense to me Jacob and I like that...just let it expire. Thanks my friend.
Dream on will. A fun piece interrupted by the reality of day to day living. Isn’t it a pain getting calls like that, especially if it means parting with cash :)) You are a prolific writer. You have a kind and generous muse.

Your heart did a great job. Maybe turn the ring tone down on your phone :)
