Falling from new heights

Falling from new heights

A Poem by willweb

I saw her walking down the path,

then leaning on this tree

I wondered if she just might like

to be up here with me

I said, “come on, it’s nice up here”

She said, “I like the ground”

I yelled, “the view is very clear,

I see for miles around”

She said, “but here the grass is green,

the flowers at my eye

I could not see these wondrous things

from up there in the sky”

“This tree is old, this branch is strong,

it easily holds the weight

I’ve been up here an hour or so

I’m sure that it won’t break”

“Oh that’s not it, my climbing friend,

that is not it at all

I do not think that branch is weak

and both of us would fall”

“Then what, if you will tell me please

keeps you so far below

For where I’m at, this highest peak

provides a perfect show”

“I just prefer the feeling of

the earth beneath my feet

The fragrance of the summer breeze

upon my face so sweet”

“But way up here the sky is blue,

like nothing that you’ve seen

The valley and the mountain side,

as if comes from a dream"

“Well, I’ll not climb this tree with you

and if a friend you be

Then you will slip down from that branch

and come down here with me”

I shimmied down the mighty oak

and staring in her eyes

I saw a view I’d never seen

on any morning skies

She said, “I’m glad you didn’t fall

from up there way above"

That’s when I thought, oh yes I did,

for I just fell in love

I found her to be beautiful

much more than any sights

And truth be known, I’m glad I’m down

for I’m afraid of heights

(But don't tell her)

Ah but we are not none and have found this bit of fun! The back and forth was particularly enjoyable a poem from contrasting points of view! A triumph.

Thanks Dave. You know what they say, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every once in a while. : ).. read more
Just beware what heights we build those pedestals of adoration to. I hate it when those things collapse. As for the view from the upper branches, it's always spectacular and that's where I've always found the ripest fruit to be. I enjoyed the read.

Thanks so much again Fabian. I appreciate your time.
This is such a cute poem! I love how She appreciates the beauty that is around her, I try to do that in my life as well. Plus, I totally relate to not wanting to climb trees. But I love the end, such a great ending to a beautiful poem!

Thanks so much Dilan. This was just a fun, lighthearted poem.
Right! No audience. Jeeeez! You've got a knack for twisting an end. The poem wraps you with a little tension as the story progresses, twists tight at the end, and leaves a little flourish of wrapping in your finish. I've got 20 years of construction. Preferred to be part of the ground crew. Had a healthy respect for heights. It's not the falling I'm afraid of, we'd say, it's the landing.

Such a delightful write! The rhyming flows so easily and the romantic ending is endearing. There is also a good message here....don't think you have the monopoly on the good things in life. Other people might have a better grasp on what the good things are! Lydi**

Fun indeed but a greater message too. We all have our perspectives but forget that others have theirs as well. It is this breach in views that leads to arguments, wars, different religions, and prevents relationships from growing. I was reminded of a French song SOS D'um Terrien En Detresse, where the world would be more beautiful looking at it upside down from above. We all need the flexibility to see things in a different way. Fun, but very meaningful my friend.

Meter perfect, delightful story - finely laid from start to finish.. plus a great example of how two can be one, somehow. This will smile me to sleep, thank you!.

Thank you Emma. A smile is what I was going for so I am glad I was successful. : )
Ha! Well at least you only stumbled into love. I discovered a new found fear of heights on a ledge about 400 to 600 feet up a munro, depending on how much I've previously exaggerated this tale.
I ended up clinging to the face so tight that I got cramp in bits I never knew cramped.
All I had to do was move about ten feet to my left to safety, but it took the help of others and a lot of baby steps over the next half hour to make it.
I think I had what is known as a panic attack these days and all over the slightest stumble that made me look down. Big mistake.
I'm with your lady on this one now and stick to where gravity can only graze me, usually by tripping up over something that probably once fell from a great height too! 😊
