Wishing well

Wishing well

A Poem by willweb

Standing here with empty pockets,

my last penny tossed in the well

Made a wish just before it hit water,

listened for the splash

then had a sinking feeling

Kicking a stone at the base

I saw my life roll down the hill

Would this be my last wish,

my final chance to win you back

I have no more pennies,

I have no more luck

Should I wait,

basing my existence on a myth

or follow that rope

holding the old galvanized bucket

and accept the fact

that change changes nothing

Some lovely plays on words here. The person's agonising over luck, fate and acceptance of the situation all come across very well. Nicely ended too.

Thank you so very much Jacky. I am thrilled you enjoyed this one today.
I really liked the speculation in this one. We really can't rely on wishes to make our dreams come true, if it were that simple we would all be skinny, famous millionaires with the love of our life on our arms. Still, there is always something appealing about that magical myth, that maybe just this once it will work in your favor. Killer last line, what a way to end it!

Wonderful write!
Sometimes wishes don't get answered in our disgusting life on Earth because a lot times it is just Hell living here, and I often wonder what the point is...?
Do we just keep hoping for the right changes?
Thanks!

U r welcome! :)
That ending.. Wow, Will! I adore this piece. It starts off so simple, something we've mostly all done, but the ending is so profound. It leaves the reader in thought. Stunning! xo :)

Thank you Madalyn for this wonderful review. I am thrilled you enjoy this one today.
"change changes nothing..." So true, both literally and figuratively - as they say - the more things change, the more they stay the same... Love this.

Awesome piece will...I'm definitely feeling this one today, as I contemplate the presence of mythology in my best intentions...

listened for the splash
then had a sinking feeling...love those lines...

follow the rope, hold the bucket - change changes nothing. Love the double meaning in that.

Thank you so much Tammy
If only throwing the coin in the wishing well could "wish things well." Such poignancy behind this.

"Made a wish just before it hit water, listened for the splash then had a sinking feeling." I felt my stomach drop while reading those lines.

Thank you so much Diana.
Have no expectations and nothing will disappoint you - yes easy to say, especially when you see your life passing away and nothing happens. I think you should do neither...not wait, not hit the bucket...just keep going...in any direction.

Deep affecting poem here Willweb. :)

Thank you so much Frontier
Waiting to board a flight to oblivion, so I stopped by to read. Had to comment on this, hope it's ok. Everyone, counsellors, ministers, family, friends, all have an opinion on what we should do, citing what's "right" and "good" for us, piling on the pressure. I say tell them to stfu and listen to your heart's whisper. Really like the line about Myth - how many of us are legends in our own lunchtime? May you find what your soul craves, may you be given the second chance that I never seem to get, may your strength and resolve be rewarded. :)
